I-10 Not again

Well its that time of year. My DW and I are starting our trip east again. We come out to Lancaster CA to manage a pumpkin patch and Christmas Tree lot for Seasonal Adventures. To stay out of the cold snowy weather I-10 is the route we take back to Georgia. I despise the stretch of road across Texas. It seems to go on forever. It takes us almost 2 1/2 days to cross Texas. I might try taking a few good doses of Zquil and let the DW do the driving. :Z

Sometimes it is not the distance. But the fact the scenery never changes for a very long time.

Tell me how wide Texas is. We leave San Diego and head to Houston quite often. Drive all the way across California, all the way across Arizona, all the way across New Mexico, go through El paso, drive up 10 another hundred miles or so - - and finally we are half-way to Houston.

X2 on the US 90 Route. Do yourself a favor and get on the Texas two lanes. Not much traffic, town every 20-30 miles. Great restaurants, chicken fried steak for lunch, and great people. Park and walk around the downtown squares. You wont regret it. My wife and I almost never take the interstates in Texas.

Texarkansas is closer to Chicago than to El Paso.

Another nice scenic drive across Texas is to take US 90 from Van Horn to San Antonio. Excellent two lane road with very little traffic. Only a few miles longer, with interesting things along the way.

If you really want to hate west texas, try flying a light single engined aircraft from east to west, in those winds.

Instead of the interstates across Texas, at El Paso I would follow US 62/180, which passes some nice scenery (Guadalupe Peak and Carlsbad Caverns). Work your way east and south using any number of roads toward Beaumont where you pick up I-10 again. Secondary roads will be all good with little traffic if you steer clear of the big cities.

I grew up in Arkansas, and went to the University of Arkansas. I was never impressed with Texan's bragging about their big state.

Until 1982 when I drove from Texarkana to El Paso.

It is BIG.

My father remembers a road sign in Texarkana before WWII that read - El Paso 1,001 miles.

I really dislike that it takes me at least two hours driving to get out of Texas - and can easily take two days if I go west or south.

Another factoid - Dallas is closer to St Louis than El Paso

At least there is scenery even if it's not your favorite kind. Once you reach Louisiana the rest of the way is just a green tunnel between the pine trees (Not to mention our roads are better)! There's also lots of side trips you could take along the way to break up the trip.
