we're headed to Moscow, Iowa for service on our HWH system next week (10/2). we have no schedule and no preference as to how we return to Arizona and are looking for some "different" places to visit.
we love photography, hiking, biking, and all sorts of nature. not looking for historical places, shopping, or cities..

does anyone have any ideas? we would like to stop at Bosque del Apache in NM to see the Sandhill Crane migration...would love to find some other birding spots..

thanks!

I could only think of 4 or 5000 places to see and do. If you want to do some birding you need to go to Rock Port Texas that is where the cranes winter. They have excursions to see them plus thousands of other birds. You could spend quite a bit of time on the Golf Cost. Just got back from a month of island hopping. Galveston, Matagorda Island, Mustang Island,Padre Island both north and south. Don't miss the Padre Island National Seashore.
That is just the coast. One thing I might mention the water temperature was 80 degrees the 26th of October.

West of Albuquerque on I40. Acoma Pueblo @ Sky City and Chaco Canyon. Both are a look back in the past. (Acoma and Anasazi Indian ruins) Acoma is still active, Chaco are ruins. Chaco Canyon only in good weather, no rain, and only if you are willing to drive on well graded dirt roads. Always check the road conditions with the ranger station at
Chaco Canyon.

Look at following the old Route 66.

There are many interesting sites along that route.

Moscow, Iowa. Grew up in Wilton. Must have gained more than sand burrs and a one paved road since I been there.

If you take I-10 into Arizona, you might want to stop in Wilcox. The Sandhills have landed there, too. In fact, there's a birding festival there in January and the Sandhills are the main attraction.

While not a birding spot, the Petrified Forest National Park offers remarkable views of the painted desert and amazing fossilized trees. And for a chilling and informative day, don't miss the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History in Albuquerque. See how much effort and treasure was expended in trying to build enough weaponry to destroy the world so that we wouldn't destroy it. See it if you can.

We stopped there...really neat. However the museum is closed one day a week. Guess what day we were there......

The Baily Train yards are fun, right on I80 in North Platte, Nebraska.
