7" GPS Mounting Locations

Those of you that have a 7" GPS, where are you mounting it?

Any sit on the dash? or use the suction cup to the windshield? Thanks, Ru

I have the 7710 Rand McNally. Mounted the steel plate on the dash and turned the arched arm upside down that attaches from the mounting plate to the unit itself. This placed the GPS partly below the front of the dash leaving less obstruction. Very easy to see over what is left sticking about the dash. Good Luck and Happy Camping.

I put some strips of sticky back velcro on the suction cup and on the dash just to the right of the instrument panel, I can see it and reach it easily and it doesn't block the view of the road.

The windshield is too far away, so I mount it with a suction cup to side window over the corner of the dashboard.

The best thing about this is I can just grab the whole thing and move it from my MH to the Toad or even a friends car. Also with just a push of the finger you can move the bean bag during daytime driving to avoid the sun's glare on the gps as you go.

I use the Garmin version of the bean bag mount.It works great for the reason that Rockhill manor reported and for the same reasons that the suction cup mounts do not work so well. Mine rides on the dash.

Suction cup to centre of windshield

Not sure I remember this exactly correct! As I recall, anything attached to the windshield or the rear view mirror will get you into the dodo in California. Best to check that out if you are planning on a wind shield or rear view mirror mount and also planning on visiting CA or are resident in CA.

I have an F350 and have mine mounted right under the rear view mirror, and the "bit of moisture" is also known as spit 😉
Would have liked to have it in the upper-left corner, but my visor blocks it too.
In the middle is the only place, but I get some awful reflective glare from the sun coming directly in the windshield and reflecting off my clothes depending on our direction of travel.

I had a really hard time mounting my 7" Rand McNally in our Ford E-350 based RV. I couldn't come up with a location that didn't significantly impeded vision or allow me to look at the screen without moving my eyes from the road. I ended up using an after-market mount and I am very satisfied.

First, I bought a RAM X-Grip mount from Amazon. They make one for any size device you can imagine. If you are familiar with the RAM product line then you know that you can assemble any kind of mounting solution you want, all based on a ball and socket type scenario.

I bought their twist lock suction cup.

Then, I bought their 6" extension arm to connect the XGrip to the suction cup.

Using the long 6" extension arm allows me to get the GPS out beyond the A pillar of the Ford. By doing so, I can actually mount the GPS in front of the A pillar and in front of and slightly below the dash. Finally, because of the freedom of movement of the ball/socket method, I can "shift" the mount over towards the door window.

On this photo I've circled the general area where I am able to get the 7" GPS to mount. Works great for my needs.

I cut and bent a piece of sheet aluminum (available in hardware store)into an ell shape. A screw in the dash panel holds it in place. It goes up and bends forward over the dash pad. The GPS mount is stuck to it.

I mount ours near the top left corner of the windshield with the suction cup. Puts it out of the driver's line of sight for traffic while also being within easy reach. Only problem with this location is that it is hidden by the sun visor when driving toward a low sun morning or evening.

A little moisture on the suction cup keeps it from losing suction.

Ours sets on the dash on a piece of wood for support. The dash on a Suburban is relatively wide and flat so it works. We tie it on with a piece of wire routed to a defroster vent just in case.
