Even the Geek Squad Couldn't figure this out

Toshiba laptop, Windows 10 Home, anniv. edition

For no apparent reason another user appeared on my login screen. Interestingly, it bore my moniker, "Mr. Ed". It sits just below the usual tile I click to sign in, which also reads "Mr.Ed". Try as I might, I couldn't find a way to delete that mystery account. It doesn't show up in "User Accounts"; only my usual admin account is there. I even tried resetting the computer, but nothing changed. So I brought my computer to the local Geek Squad. Two technicians tried to troubleshoot it, but were stumped. They had never before come across something like this before. One of them surmised that it may have been put there by Microsoft because of some glitch in my normal account, but nobody really knows. Fortunately, I'm not locked out of my PC. But it's certainly a curious thing. I'll follow the Geeks' suggestion to just leave it alone since it doesn't appear to be harmful and I can still sign in.

Look for the instructions to have the operating system remember your password. This will allow you to have an automatic signon since this is what it seems you wan to do. I've had my computers set up this way for years and it works fine. For security on my laptop I've set the bios to ask for a password on power up.

If you're worried about a lack of security if the OS doesn't ask for a password, it's a false sense of security; there's plenty of utilities that can reset the signon password to blanks.

Looks like I may have resolved it. I went back to netplwiz and checked the box that says, "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". I had unchecked the box as I was attempting to either change or eliminate the log-in password. My bad. ;). Thanks, everyone, for your input.

have you tried to take your computer back to a restore point before you saw this on the screen?

Try that and see what happens.

You'll need to find a real professional local, the geek squad people can't handle real problems. I'm 100% certain I could fix this, but trying to diagnose via a forum would not be effective.

I hadn't heard of that one before. If you Google "Windows 10 duplicate username" you can find the probable cause and some possible solutions. I'm surprised the GS couldn't solve it. Good luck!
