How can I update to Windows 10?

My laptop came with Vista, but the day I bought it, I blew that away and installed XP-pro. When it crashed a while back, the guy who repaired it updated it to Windows 7 because XP support was going away. It was a properly licensed version - I get all updates, etc. The only thing I didn't get was the little icon that allowed update to Windows 10.
Attempts to upgrade to Windows 10 on-line require a license key. I don't have one, and the guy who installed Win 7 is no longer available.
Is there any way around this?
Thanks

Nice - if it were true.
I didn't try burning the DVR, but it will not install directly without a product key. That's how I was trying to do it! I suspect that trying to install from the DVR would have the same result.

It worked fine on the 2 computers I used it on to do the upgrade. Was never asked for the product key.

You did say you have a properly activated version of Win 7 installed, didn't you?

Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit, OEM DVD)

One of my old PC's died before I could upgrade to Windows 10 so I am building a new one with an OEM DVD. I prefer a clean install over an upgrade.

Thanks for all the replies, but it looks like I'm stuck with Windows 7.
BelArc gave me the product key, but it wouldn't work. On-line chat w/Windows help desk confirmed that it is a valid OEM version product key but the update was blocked by the retailer.
Oh well, I'm not really unhappy with Win 7, so I guess it's not that big a deal.

As I said above, you CAN upgrade if you want to.

That is not the Product Key. It's the Product ID. There is a difference.

Keep Windows 7. You are not gaining anything really over that with Win 10. I have Win 7 on my desktop and I will not upgrade it to Win 10. I upgraded a new laptop from 8.1 to 10 only because I did not like 8.1.

If you really want the Win 10 update and you know your PC processor, etc. will handle it -> If you tried the install from the Win 10 website and it asked for your product key then it did not recognize the one that is installed on your computer. Right click on the "Computer" icon on your Win 7 desktop. Look down at the bottom of the screen that opens and it will list the product key that is installed on your PC. If that one is the same as the one you have, then there is something wrong and I would call MS back again - by phone and not chat. If it is not the same number then use this one to input to the Win 10 install.

What do you mean the "update was blocked by the RETAILER" ? What Retailer? Windows 10 should be free and readily available from MicroSoft by download. No "Retailer" involved. I do not understand your problem....

DW's laptop came with Vista and got a free upgrade to W7. It has the W10 icon on it (but I haven't done it yet).

If you honestly believe you have legit Windows7 then you should give Microsoft a call - zero downside.

To upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 you must have Service Pack 1 installed and Win 7 activated. I don't recall if the upgrade prompted for a license key when I upgraded from Win 7. If it asks, try skipping that step and see if it will continue without entering the key. Check the following link for help:
