50 Ways to Lighten Your RV

A forum member mentioned the need to de-clutter the rv. Thought a thread of ideas from the rveterans could be useful.
1. Kitchen: use knives instead processors. A set of 3 sharp knives are easy to use; easy to clean; and can be mounted on the inside of the cabinet door.

2. Buy the bottled beverages locally instead of packing them for breakage. Go into the local town and you might discover a new favorite wine or microbrew. One trip we discovered mead and had them ship a case to the house. Traveling is about new experiences too.

Hi,

I've eliminated 3 hot plates, gone to a combo grill/waffle/sandwich maker, one fry pan, one dutch oven, one large pot with steamer and double boiler inserts, and removed the stove top percolator coffee pot.

I did add an induction cooker.

I've reduced the number of plates I carry from 11 down to 7, just four bowls left. I do carry one mixing bowl as well.

I'll be rationalizing all my various and sundry cords limiting myself to one #12 100 foot, a 100 foot #10, 50 foot #10, 30 foot #10 and 20 foot #10.

I now carry two four liter jugs of drinking water.

Once I get my ARP fridge overheating control installed, I'll be eliminating the 6 leveling boards I've been carrying. It will be a real blessing to not have to worry about being level enough for the fridge.

I've eliminated some of the electric heaters as I've moved to electrically heated carpets. They truly improve the comfort levels.
Regards, Don

We full time so it's easy to keep packing stuff in if not careful.
We don't buy a lot of canned goods at one time. We buy a few as we travel.
Fresh water tank 1/2 full. Dump tanks before long travel.
Every 6 months, go through everything and get rid of things we haven't used in last year.

50. Relax, you aren't going to get good MPG regardless, so if you want something, take it (assuming you bough a capable truck that isn't overloaded with an empty RV). The nice thing about an RV over tenting is you leave all the camping gear in the rig and just hook up and go. When you decide you want something, it's in the RV not back in the garage.

The easiest and probably most effective thing is to run with the tanks empty. That will eliminate a lot of weight (as in hundreds of pounds). The exception being boondocking take enough fresh water but consider if you can fill up close to the destination.

We only bring balsa fire wood and drink non fat milk. Everyoe uses the rest room before we leave. OK trying to be funny. I do go through the rig once a year and thin out stuff. But really, even in our rig a hundred pounds is not noticable. Don't worry about it.

We use paper plates, mostly for ease of clean-up, but they do save a bit of weight over china.
