Confused about power awning

My power awning only works if the trailer is plugged into the shore or hooked up to my TV. That can't be right? Can it? If so I just want to say that's stupid.... But more realistically what can it be?

Yeah, I think it is the battery. Put jumper cables from TV to TT and it worked without shore power or 7pin. Thank you everyone for your help. Love this forum!!!

Will not work with ignition key on...

The O/P mentioned it works if hooked to his TOW VEHICLE, so he has a trailer. No ignition.

That said, I agree with the battery questioners. Most likely you have it turned off (Disconnected) and thus no power to awning less from an "outside" source. but the battery could be toast.

On my Starcraft (part of Jayco) the awning, slideout and tongue jack are wired in before the battery disconnect switch. They are wired in at an indoor style metal electrical box on the tongue by the battery. Each has its own inline fuse. I've had problems with corroded connections in the box causing weird problems.

Sounds like a weak battery to me. Check the voltage at the battery and at the awning motor before and during switch operation. A poor connection could cause the problem as well. There may be just enough getting thru when the voltage is at its highest.

Were the keys in the ignition when you tried the awning? I seem to remember ours won't work with the keys in the ignition. Your safety could kick in when the keys are in the ignition and not plugged into shore power because it thinks you're about to drive away. However, with the keys in the ignition, and plugged into the shore power it knows you're not going to drive away while plugged in, so it lets you operate the awning.

Take your keys out of the ignition and see if works like it used to.

Yeah.... Everything else is working. That's why it makes no sense to me. Slide worked. Lights worked. Awning didn't. I plugged in shore power and awning worked fine. Unplugged shore power awning didn't work. Plugged in 7pin awning worked. Unplugged 7pin awning didn't work. It used to work off battery. I'll check it again tomorrow... Too bizarre for this hour of the night.

Go out to trailer and make sure your battery disconnect is turned on.

Check your 12V fuses. Could be the one for the awning is blown. Should be a diagram on the fuse cover

Like said above the quick check to see if the batteries are working (Connected) is just turn on the CEILING LIGHTS when not connected to shore power. The Ceiling lights runs off your 12VDC (Your batteries in this case with shore power turned off).

If they do not work then you have either dead batteries or something failed between the batteries and the converter. Could be as simple as the Battery Disconnect switch has been engaged or a tripped circuit breaker or fuse that is installed between the battery terminals and the 12VDC Distribution panel where all the fuses are are located...

Using a multimeter to measure the battery terminals when shore power is disconnected is 12.6-7VDC for a fully charged battery. When you connect to shore power this battery level should jump up to 13.6VDC telling you the batteries are being charged by the on-board converter/charger unit.

If you are not plugged into shore power, do the house lights and water pump work? If they do not, do you have a battery? If you do, did the battery disconnect switch get flipped to "off"?

Your awning runs on 12 volt DC battery power. If it only runs when plugged in, it's running from the converter, the battery is somehow disconnected from the trailer.
