Gas station etiquette

On the way to Big Cypress/Everglades I stopped for fuel at the Flying J in Dade City, FL. In the left gas lane was a shiny new Winnebago View, no toad, NY license plates. In the right lane an older class A with a toad. The owner of the class A was putting in fuel. There was no activity at all around the View. I pulled in behind the class A and got out to stretch my legs. The owner of the class A said he had waited for 10 minutes behind the View and finally went to the other lane when it opened. He finished fueling and I pulled up to the pumps. Still no activity around the View. As I was pumping gas, the owner of the View finally came out and STARTED refueling.

Two questions. Since he had a class C and wasn't towing, couldn't he have used the regular automobile lanes, and left the RV lanes for bigger rigs? Second question, is it any wonder NY residents get a bad reputation? I travel to NYC often, and have met many wonderful people, but its folks like these who give tho whole state a bad name.

On the same trip, I stopped at a service area on the Florida turnpike. We needed lunch and fuel, so I parked where I was directed, out with the 18-wheelers. We went in to grab lunch, then headed out to get fuel. Since I need gasoline, not diesel, I maneuvered back to the gas islands and pulled in the far right gas lane behind a mini-van towing a small TT, Ohio plates. Once again, I failed to see any activity around the rig, so I got out and walked up to see if there was a problem. You guessed it. Nobody there. I carefully backed up, then S-snaked my way into the next lane. As I was pulling out, here come the Ohio folks with a couple of fast food bags. We thanked them for their courtesy:R.

Why can't folks learn to fuel up first, then go park, then go shop.

So after I get gas and I pull to the front parking to get my change won't my trailer be blocking the traffic between the pumps and the building?

Sorry had to bring a bit of humor here

Saying that, we do pull ahead if we can. Some places do not like you to, we have been yelled at many times for moving forward

Really, away from the pumps after fueling and paying? I find that hard to believe, unless the new space was blocking traffic.

Just because you are on holiday doesn't meany you can park at the pump for 15 to 30 minutes, while you pay, go to the restroom, and get some food. Why not just run out the slides and cook lunch! :M
Most people think of fueling stop as a stop and go thing, if you want a "safety break" pull into a parking space.

We get the gas then pull up in front of the door and go in the store and pay for the gas!!!! That way, somebody who hasn't got the extra few minutes are not waiting. It is done quite often here, but we have been yelled at by attendants for doing so.

I have never been sitting at a pump for 15 or 30 minutes waiting for someone who is inside paying or using the facilities. Sometimes there could be a small child that, at the moment, in the store has to go.

Be careful how you retaliate! That inconsiderate idiot could be carrying a gun and make another stupid move. I love to watch their reaction from inside my truck as they reach for their door handle that is covered with Vaseline LOL. If they are a big idiot then it goes under their windshield wipers.

It's not limited to New Yokers & Dillweeds campin at the pumps. Fueling at that little truck stop on the North end of La Pine Oregon a dirt-wad pulls up behind us pulling a little fishing boat and after a couple 3 minutes he just start yelling and cussing at me. Guess he thought it was taking to long to put the 80 or so gallons of diesel in our truck. Also guess he figured since I was taking an extra few minutes to fuel that the fish would all be gone when he got to the lake, OH WELL! There's jerk-wads scattered all over this country. JOMO

The problem is gas stations aren't the real thing anymore, just a gas stop or repairs. With all the quick change oil places and cheap maintenance facilities that went to the wayside years ago. Revenue loss. So they went after the convenience market and are doing well with it. Good business model for them. I've seen party stores near gas stations close for this reason.

It is just a great place to observe the breakdown of society and the new " me" mind frame. But I will say there are times were all the parking spaces are full in the front past the pumps. I don't defend the behavior and see it as nothing but ignorance. I've seen people park at the pump go in the store and come back and leave without getting any gas.

It's a sign of the times.

This is common behavior, RV, car or whatever, since gas stations disappeared to be replaced by convenience stores and "travel centers." I've seen people park at the pump to go in for drinks and snacks, without ever pumping gas.

It is a generational change in social mores, don't expect it to turn back into the 1950's anytime soon.

wow, pile it on. was the other driver's cash not as green as yours? or perhaps you needed fuel in a hurry while on your way to putting out fires and rescuing kittens? was this the last gas station for the next 1000 miles, leaving no other option?

Wow, really!
When I pull up to fuel pumps I expect that the person in front of me is there for the same reason, to get a tank full and leave, not buy their lunch, go to the restroom, and text six friends!
If they need or wish to go inside to pay cash that should not take any longer than 5 minutes.

Being considerate of others has gone the way of common sense!!

I will say I had just the opposite happen to me the last time I fueled. The diesel pumps are the first on a two pump island. The car in front of me, had gas door open, the car in front had just finished and left. I was just waiting for them to be fueled, when he chose to pull to the forward pump, allowing me to pull up and also get fueled. ๐Ÿ™‚

If there is any problem at the pump in front of us, I would just be pro-active and try and help the person in front of us if there was any kind of a delay. Not to be rude, but to try and be helpful - and hopefully that would remind those folks that there are people in line behind them - AND help them if they need it. Simple fix! Happy camping, all!

et2, good one. I think I maight have asked him if he was on his way too or coming from, church.

If going to church suggest he stay for 2 services, if coming from, suggest that he return for another service or perhaps change churches as evidently his current one is not doing the job for him.

Stupid cannot be fixed, even when it drives a Mercedes.

My train horn tends to get their attention and they move rather quickly. Have done this twice in the last year. Yes, its rude to block the pumps.

Had that happen numerous times. One occasion I pulled behind one of these clowns in a nice Mercedes sitting at the diesel pump. His wife and two kids were sitting in the car, it was Sunday and they were dressed like they came from church. 10 minutes went buy with this guy a no show. The hose is in the tank but nothing pumping. So I'm about 8 feet from the back of his car all this time waiting.

So here he comes in his Sunday best. He walks up to the pump and stands there and pulls out his cell phone to answer a text. Returns the hose to the pump and gets in his car. Well there was a car which pulled in front of him pretty close so he couldn't make a easy exit pulling forward, he would need to back up. So I took the liberty of quickly filling that void behind him. So there he sits blocked in. He jumped out of his car yelling at me to move. Which of course I didn't. This made him mad and he started approaching me swearing. I just gave him a big smile from ear to ear. His wife started hollering at him to get back in the car. Finally the person in front of him moved to leave and gave him a exit.

Yeah, it felt good. There was no way he was moving our 8ft Bed 1 ton dually.
