Has anyone had a run in with any WILD animals?

Hi,

I watched a U-Tube video the other day showing some buffalo in Yellowstone. There was an RV in the road that was surrounded by them. It got me wondering:

Has anyone had any run ins with WILD animals while RVing? I don't mean squirrels or rabbits, but maybe something wild and dangerous. If so, pictures would be nice to see.

Thanks, and I can't wait to hear some interesting stories.

Yeah, in the South Texas brush I shot this guy with my Kodak, and then drew my gun when he turned towards me. Then, he ran away:

Then, there was the time when I woke up mama deer and baby deer in my side yard. I thought she was going to attack me, but she ran towards the back fence. That's when I took pictures of the little one:

Does a snake count. I was at John Day, sitting on a bench, enjoying the sun and views when I heard a rattling that came from right under me. You have never seen an old lady move so fast, and the old man chased the damn thing to get a better view.

This didnt happen to us, but the camper next to us put his cooler under the awning of his trailer ( this campground specifically tells you NOT to do that as it is in bear country. Well we heard a ruckus one morning very early and sat up and watched a bear rip the awning right off that trailer!

The main reason we camp is to be closer to nature. We welcome all wild animal "run ins". Unfortunately for us, our wild animal run-ins are usually lizards, deer or turkey. We did have a cow roam through our campsite once. He wasn't wild though, just escaped from a nearby pasture. At our season camp site, we do get skunks visiting every so often.

I just cooked some ribs over the campfire and my wife was sitting at a picnic table when a raccoon came up and tugged on her pants leg for her to give him some ribs too. That was about the worse for RVing...

Now "other" forms of camping in some locales I've had far more interesting run ins with locals; like chimps, orangutans (did you know they can change your tire on a Hummer without even taking the tire off the rim? They just remove the whole wheel...) , water buffalo (don't try pushing them out of the way with a Hummer - the buffalo has a higher GVWR), water moccasins, pythons, wild boars, etc...

We had a skunk wander into our campsite last summer after dark. went inside to get marshmallows to roast and come out and there he was right by the fire. I didn't make any sudden movements!

We had about an 8 foot alligator crawl within 50 feet of our site in Florida last year but they are so common here that we don't get too excited just be careful.

The only dangerous "confrontation" I can remember was on a trout fishing camping trip in Montana. Early one morning I climbed a small hill behind the camp to watch the sun come up over the mountains. While sitting down I heard something behind and above me and turned to see a black bear about 50 yards away feeding on berries, cool I thought. Then I hear something below be, turn, and and see two small cubs about 50 yards below me, now I am between mom and her cubs, not cool! I got up slowly and started to move parallel across the hill to get out of that position when I see another bear about twice the size of the mom blocking that direction. Luckily I was able to reverse course and quietly move out of the area on somewhat shaky legs. When I got back to camp the guide says "oh yea I meant to tell you'll that the bears are out feeding on berries now"

The OP did not specify 2 legged, 4 legged or no legged. So I guess it is wide open.

Two legged wild animals: well, lets not talk about my camping buddies

But I did stumble across a quail nest on the ground one time. The mother bird did the "injured wing" routine to get me to follow her away from the nest.

Quite a few snakes of various types

Had coyotes circling the camper at 1 in the morning. Dogs didnt like that.

Two different times had a wildcat outside the camper. One time it was approximately 150lbs of muscles, fur and claws. The other time it was a 5er

Also had some wild cows wander around the camper.

Does this constitute an encounter with a wild animal? What do I win?

Means you have a blue thumb or toe. Can attract blue birds and skinks.
Can you raise tomatoes? 🙂

Killer beavers
Not really but I had a German Shepherd who was well trained, (not all my dogs were) and he would walk by my side without a leash and would never leave it for any reason. A ranger came up and warned me that the park had killer beavers and we needed to put our dog on a leash. I never saw these killers but I did put the dog on a leash.

Small things.
I had a Chipmunk run up my leg to escape a cat. It died of shock later anyway.
I had a rabbit come to me to be rescued from a crow that was pecking it to death. It had a broken leg.
Several years ago, now son and I were doing some yard work. We found a beautiful green snake on the ground. Son picked it up. It had a arrow shaped head and was a gorgeous green fading to white underneath. It coiled around his wrist and forearm. It didn't protest the least. We let it go onto some vines and small trees in the fence line.
1968 Basic Ft Campbell some one found small snakes a couple days in a row, in water in a ditch. The second one was a bronze brown with longitudinal stripes and white elongated diamonds between the lines and some white dots on the side also. they had put it in the butts can next to the walk. It was not any thicker than a pencil lead or seems so. We had to go to formation or something and it was gone later. To this day I can't find a photo or description like it anywhere. It was not a horsehair snake, or worm. I've seen plenty of them. It had a forked red tongue that it worked in and out a lot.
Our last home we had lots of little brown gray snakes about 6 or 8 inches long with bullet shaped heads, in the grass thatch. They didn't hurt anything. They fed on crickets and other bugs. We've seen a couple here next to the pation, in the thatch.

Took the dog out for a walk one summer night in Bentsen Rio Grande State Park (now a bird sanctuary). Set him down on the ground and could hear the javelina coming towards us. Apparently summertime is so hit in South Texas no one went to the park and the javelina were hungry. Threw the dog back in the trailer just in time. You could see their eyes shining in the dark.
