Help me understand

Yesterday morning I spent at a nationwide rv dealership getting some work done on the rv plug in my truck. I ask the Certified RV mechanic about disc brakes and he said that the factory installed brake control was not acceptable for the pump that it takes to operate them and that I should get a top of the line brake control. This sounded strange to me ........Who would know if it is a true statement or just a personal opinion??

I just bought a 5th wheel with disc brakes and my 2014 GMC factory controller would not work. Dealer installed a P3 with hydraulic over electric option.

Some newer trucks have this option but as late as 2014 the GM trucks do not.

The dealer bought mine because the saleseman told me all of the newer trucks would work with the disc brakes.

Yesterday you praised the Certified Master Mechanic on job well done rewiring your rv plug so that the trailer brakes now work properly and today you question his advise on whether your brake controller is up to snuff for disc brake operations..........:H

Poor mechanic can't get a break.

YES-depending on which factory brake controller you have it may NOT work with a disc brake conversion.

X2: Older OEM brake controllers only worked on conventional drum/electric brakes. The newer trucks are supposed to work on drum and or disc.

You will have to do more research. There are lots of poats around here about factory controllers, especially the first couple of years, not working with disc brake actuators. From what I have read newer trucks seem to have been fixed. Check out the different brands of acruators, yes there are several, and start by asking the different manufacturers if their product will work with your trucks built in controller.

My personal opinion: He gets a commission on sales and installations.
What does the brake manufacturer say on the topic? Does the brake manufacturer make their own controller?
All your controller does is send an electrical signal to your actuator. As long as the voltage output meets the actuators requirements why wouldn't your OEM work just as well?
