How fast do you honestly tow?

And if over 70 mph do you really feel safe? I was traveling in my car on the freeway today. I trailed a rver who seemed to be moving pretty fast. I matched his speed at 77 mph. He was pulling about a 32' aluminum travel trailer which had the axles flipped, so it road pretty high off the ground with the nose angled down to the knuckle. The pickup was a short bed F150.

Just my perspective, but man that was way to fast, especially for the setup he had. I'd wager he had his foot buried in the pedal.I started thinking about all the things that could go wrong. Why do so many push he envelope? If I had to be in that much of a hurry I'd give up camping. I tow at 65 - 68, maybe that's too fast?

So what say you is really a safe speed?

I have high speed tires on my truck and trl. In Texas, the speed limit is 80 and thats for the slow lane. I tow up to 90 and feel quite safe. Going south on 35 or 45, if you don't go 70-75 u gonna get run over. I see them all the time doing 55 in a 75-80 speed limit interstate, and they do cause problems.

One of the first things that came to my mind was if it had ST tires. We had Duro tires on our Cameo ( switched to G 614s). The second year we almost lost two on the same day with huge sidewall bulges. I just don't have faith in ST tires at their 65 mph rating much less at 77 mph. Too many other variables as well. Are the tires at the right inflation, bearings greased, brakes good, tires cracked or old, etc. I've had to do very hard braking going around 40 and I near soiled by trousers. At 77 how long will it take you to do a emergency stop?

Why push that knowing what they're rated at?? At 77 mph a blown tire on a raised trailer with a short bed 1/2 ton pickup? I made sure I kept my distance behind him. After reading many posts here I'm reconsidering my 65-68 traveling speed. This speed seems to keep in in a good power range. I will try slower on my next 5 hr trip in July.

Of all the replies in this thread, I really like this one. Can't wait until it's my turn to say it.

I usually run about 63-64 on the interstate...that's where the truck seems to run the best. I don't mind going 70 if I have to but as I'm retired I usually don't have to.

62 seems like a good speed for my setup (level and on the freeway). Has more to do with the transmission than with traffic.

I'm in the middle of a several month trip.
My older class C is towing a 3200 lb car.
I generally stay off the freeways and set the cruise at about 58 mph.
I feel comfortable with that and pull to the side if I see traffic behind me that can't pass.
I was on the freeway for one stretch because I changed the settings on the GPS and forgot to change it back to Avoid Freeways.
My next stretch of driving will be lengthier than usual. I compared the Freeway and non-freeway distance and time. 1 mile difference and 20 minutes longer.
A no brainer there. Slower and steadier without watching for the lunatics.

55 to 65 miles per hour = 1800 to 2000 rpm's approx. in The Big Sprocket.

We follow the 55 mph limit here because it's the posted speed while towing.
