How old were you when you retired?

I am 58 years old, work full time and even do some welding and construction on the weekends. The latter is where we get a lot of our RV and travel budget. Most of our trips are 1 week with a few that go 10 or 12 days. With both of our jobs it is hard to get away any longer than that. Even now when we travel we usually take at least a few minutes each day to answer business emails and even take/make a few phone calls.

We have saved all of our lives and look forward to retirement and longer trips. We have no desire to full time but 2 to 4 month trips are definitely in the plan.

Lately I have been thinking a lot about when to do this. The biggest problem I see is medical insurance. Both of us have some issues that require doctor visits every 2 to 4 months so unless something changes that is as long as we could be gone. I had a surgery 2 years ago that was over $100,000. Without insurance that would have been very hard on our retirement budget.

So, how old were you when you retired and what did you do about medical insurance?

Been retired now for 70 days. At the age of 57. I had to purchase my own insurance. Thought about retirement for several years before I made the final decision. Did a lot of planning and working the numbers. The biggest unknown factor was health care, ( Obama care ). Was able to keep an old plan though.

Hubby retired last year at 60,I am semi retired at 59. Will officially retire when I reach 60 this summer, but will continue to work part time, from the home or trailer, via the internet. Hubby might look for a part time job in the future, but, after 43 years of working as a welder for the railroad, he isn't really pushing the search. He loves to fish and hunt, and is totally enjoying the freedom.

I retired when I was 39 - after 20 years with the US Navy.\

When I was 58 - the company I was working for 'invited' many of the folks in the IT division to retire, so my second retirement.

Since then I've worked harder than ever in my life at limited short term jobs. I go on the road to relax when ever possible.

I'll be working for a free camping site for the NPS this summer for 3 months.

I was 59.5 when I retired. DW is still working as she is younger than I. Health insurance I pay on my own. No health issues and insurance cost is reasonable.

I was 61 1/2 when I went out on disability and have never missed the job in 13 happy years. What I do miss is the great team of people with whom I worked.

Being a owner operator of excavating company it will be very hard to stop working all together. I have worked hard all my life building this company and almost lost it when housing market crashed and wife was ill. Now at age of 61 I will work on my nephew taking more interest in learning how to run the company , not just working for me. This will be my retirement if he can do that and some day he might want to buy from me and I would finance it and co run it. This leaves more RV time but I don't see myself ever stop working hard outdoors.
