Map on your dining table?

I have always thought that a big map of the USA would make a great dining table top. It would be there all the time for planning your next trip.
Any ideas on how to laminate it to a table?
I thought about Plexiglas but it scratches so easily. Maybe a decoupage type treatment?

How do you prevent the glass from sliding during your travels?

You can use a little "museum putty" on each corner and it will hold fast! Also called "quake putty"

Wow, You know I was just watching a show last night which is RIGHT up your alley!!!

The show I was watching was I WANT THAT... on the DIY Channel.

The thing that is IMPORTANT is they were advertising a NEW Product... CHECK this OUT!!

http://www.wallpapered.com/

It is literally WALLPAPER!

I figure that if you give them the SIZE you want, (i.e. your Table)they can print you out a WALLPAPER of it and you can "Past" it to your table. THEN all you have to do is to paint a little Varnish on it and PRESTO there you go!

Just my 2 Cents!

Hope this gives you some thoughts...

You would need an awfully big table to have a map that you could use for route planning.

Great ideas! Thanks everyone.
I like the laminated sheet idea but keeping it in place would be harder, kind of like a oversized placemat.
I will have to check out the 2 part resin idea.

PS my lovely likes a clean kitchen too I wouldn't use a dirty map. lol and besides I do the dishes and clean up when we are on the road so I get to decide!!

My tabletop has (2) 3 1/2" cutouts for drink holders. The drink holders are removable but the holes remain. As near as I can tell, that would remove large portions of Georgia and Oregon. ๐Ÿ™‚

Here's the "something like it".

A two part video on how to make a poured resin tabletop:

Part one.

Part two.

I would make an entirely new tabletop with 1/2" plywood and the mounting hardware from the existing top. That way, if I ever wanted to change it back, just swap tabletops.

I use an Atlas and my gps. DW likes to keep a neat kitchen so I don't think she'd go for it. Good idea though.

Office Depot/Office Maxx or Kinko's can laminate large size prints like maps, etc. Unless you secure it, I think glass would slide during travel. With a laminated map, you can use dry erase markers or grease pencil to write on it. If you go that route, It would simply lay flat on your table. You have me thinking - small maps as place mats.

I did fiberglass work for years and the two part fiberglass epoxy makes a great top cover. Several of the businesses here at the coast have it on their table tops and counters. It is even used in restaurants over the plain wood tables and looks great.

I would recommend to carry the table top and map to a boat building shop and have them to spray several coats of clear epoxy over it. You do not want to use resin.

I wouldn't apply it permanently unless you plan to replace the table when you sell it. Not everyone would like the idea.

You could just find your map to fit the table and take it to have it professionally laminated. Then use it as a placemat. It wouldn't break and it's not permanent. Or just make laminated placemats of maps of some of your favorite areas and rotate them.
