Never RV without your propane shut off at the tanks

I was in the accident linked below last Tuesaday. After the crash the truck was still running and i was unable to reach the key to shut it off until I finally managed to release my seat belt. There was a strong smell of propane. The hoses from the tanks on the trailer hitch had severed and propane was leaking out rapidly. An explosion was a very real possibilty.

BTW, the police told me I was very lucky to survive. Injured but alive

On another note, I had a dash cam they are a good thing to invest in.

While it would be easy to say I would not have swerved, I am sure the instinct would have kicked in and would have one the same.

Glad the injuries were minor, your statement about the dash cam makes me think the other driver didnโ€™t stop.

A 58 mph difference in speed would have resulted in severe if not fatal injuries. All these people being judgemental, and advising what they would have done. Unless you are in that situation, you have no idea on what you will do, instinct will take over without time for thought.

Glad you are not seriously injured, hopefully you will get this settled with the insurance company quickly and get back to RVing.

If you'd hit him from behind, you would have pushed him forward. Not likely you would have killed him or especially yourself. Both vehicles can take a tremndous hit in that situation.
Besides, it doesn't matter. It's you and your family or him. You make the best choice for your own.
But I understand that split second decision in such a abnormal situation. You did OK and all is well.

You know I had 1.5 seconds to decide what to do, there was about a 30% chance of swerving past him and not wiping out. Our speed diference was maybe 58 MPH in the photo. If I had hit him it would have killed him and possibly myself. Here is a frame from my dash cam, you can see what i mean

I'm glad that all the safety systems did their job including your seat belt.

No fire, no atomic bomb explosion; nothing. A wreck were nobody got killed. I hope you get a new trailer soon and get back on the road.

The heading is never drive without shutting off your propane.Yet so many do.Some leave it on while refueling. I always turn mine off.

I would jump off a cliff but I'd have to drive to one and that's just too dangerous now.

OP, seriously, I'm glad you'll be OK. It's truly amazing how modern will protect us in a crash.
Hopefully Ins. will treat your right and you can go shopping for a new rig soon!

Does your tv not have an inertial switch to cut fuel during a wreck?

My F150 does and I assumed all vehicles do.

I'm very glad to hear you are OK-that was a very severe incident.

To all you second-guessers, it's very easy to say what you THINK you would have done-until you get in that position. There are so many subtleties in each situation that make us decide what we do, and they flash by in nano-seconds. Instead of criticizing why don't you just be thankful the injuries weren't serious?

If possible, that's what I do. Alternately, if the speed limit is high enough, there's a plethora of vehicles (esp semis) behind me, and the oncoming traffic will force a stop, I'll continue on to make a U-turn.

I'm terrified of this situation enough to do the above, and I have.

I'll never forget rounding a corner at 50mph and in an instant I see a guy stopped in the road making a left. Stopping would have been a disaster, so I whipped around him on the shoulder. Terrifying. A stopped left turn at the end of a blind curve? That's the worst.

THough you may find the idea of stopping to make a left insane. But if there is oncoming traffic what choice do you have?????

Now Since I have all the time in the world but only so many fenders I have been known to pull off on the right shoulder and wait till there was no traffic in EITHER direction before turning. But Even that is not always possible as a big motor home needs 9 feet of shoulder and sometimes you only have five

I have run that scenario out through my grey matter before.

i would have taken the vehicle that swerved in front of me out. Just me.
