Ok - we are seeing more folks driving with their rear windows open. Why, please?

I rarely leave windows open while in motion, but even (especially?) in the hottest or coldest weather have the rearmost roof vent, the washroom in my case, wide open while travelling.

The vacuum created makes a huge difference in how effective the dash heat & A/C is in keeping the coach comfortable.

My first thought would be I couldn't care less what others do with their windows.

I have no problem if a fellow RV'er notices a window open, or something else that might have been forgotten (TV antennae up, for instance), and mentions it to me. Actually, I hope they would.

I met a TT last year while we were going down the road in opposite directions. He had left his antennae up. I tried to motion to him that there was a problem. He didn't see me though, he was too busy texting on his phone.

True Story !

Do you get better mileage driving with the tailgate up or down?? Mythbusters tried it, but I don't remember the results.

Many years ago I read there is almost no difference. One study - Motortrend maybe? - found that a small amount of "vacuum" formed behind trucks cabs when the tailgate is down. Actually found there was a miniscule increase in mileage, meaning better mileage, when the tailgate is up. The best they could figure is that the up tailgate directed some air into the "vacuum", breaking it up, and increasing fuel mileage. All numbers, though, were very small - realistically no difference.

I haven't read or seen anything recently.

Humm, I like to have air flow in what ever I am driving. If I had a Motor Home I think that leaving the back window open would be the perfect idea to get air to flow through the RV without adding much noise. If you have decent air flow you can shut the AC off.

Also, I suppose,,, There is a big suction behind a RV that is trying to slow you down and robs gas mileage. I suppose it's possible that people believe that if you leave that back window open you are breaking some of that suction and helping yourself out. Might be some truth in that !!

Sometimes we travel with the roof vents open. We have covers on all of them. Why? For ventilation, especially in HOT weather. We don't open windows, bu the roof vents do help keep air circulating and from getting so dang HOT inside the camper.

We always leave at least one slideing window unlocked, not necessarily the same one. Sometimes we drive with one or more open for ventilation. But we have been locked in or out by failing door locks at least twice, and a unlocked window prevents breaking one.

Sometimes it is this. And this is the time of year for it.

IN THE CAMPGROUND it is more energy efficient plus there are other benefits to opening the windows Firing up the Max-Air or Fantastic Fan and shutting down the air conditioners... THen you forget to close the windows.

Do not know about motor homes but long about 40 MPH on cars it's more efficient to close the windows (Improves air flow around the car) and fire up dash air.

Dash air. Fails and many C's don't have generators like my A does (New A/C Compressor this spring in fact on my A)

I do not lock my windows. Sometimes they open on their own (Well the rear windows are either locked or up/down,, The front windows other than the cockpit are sliders)

I found that if I have an open window, the suction of passing trucks will pull a window on the opposite side and it starts to rattle. This drives the DW nuts and she has to get up and diddle with the window until it's silent again.
