Fall is rapidly approaching and the leaves are starting to fall. Just a reminder that wet leaves are deceiving and can be as slippery as ice. As the temps start to fall also be aware that they can cover up ice that may be lurking underneath.

Thanks for the post. To tell you the truth I had no idea. But, I live on the prairie. I can't think of a time when there were enough leaves on the road around here to cause a problem.

Maybe at the park but, in those cases you are only going less then 5 mph.

I have heard of people getting into an accident (not automobile) just walking out their door and slipping on wet leaves and EMS needed to be called.. But then my phone number was 9-1-1.

As I posted earlier: I locked 'em up on wet leaves, the only thing that prevented me from crashing was that I was in a traffic jam and was barley moving, but I still went into a 4 wheel skid.. Every educational under the conditions. But Yes, they are dangerous.. Ever since that day I've been very careful on wet leaves. Slippery as ice.

Oh, I might add it does not take that long a stretch, A short patch can send you slightly sideways, throw off your driving and cause a major disaster.

Great reminder. My aunt died as a result of her car going out of control on wet leaves (this happened in the 1960's). Agnes

Could be. I know in the Fall wet leaves on the road DO cause problems up here in the Northeast. Thanks for the reminder Crowe.

I guess if there is a long patch of leaves spanning many, many feet it could be a problem. In all my years of driving, I've never heard of someone getting into an accident because they couldn't stop their car on wet leaves.

Yes, I've walked and slipped on wet leaves, but never had a problem stopping my car on wet leaves. Maybe it's a regional thing. I don't think I've ever driven in MA in the fall.

Wet Redwood needles are slippery, but they don't drop leaves.

Nope. Every year there are accidents due to wet leave slides as people just don't understand how slick they can get. Same with black ice, but that's a whole 'nuther story.

I live in Minnesnowta. A lot of people forget how to drive during the summer and fall. Then winter comes and it seems they all need to relearn how to drive in slippery conditions. Reminding them how to drive in the winter doesn't seem to do anything 🙂

Besides, it's not everyone that forgets. Obviously you remembered.

wa8yxm, I'm assuming you mean "pedestrians" and not pediatricians! Thanks for the support (and you too rhagfo!). Guess the "perfect" drivers on here are aware of every situation they may encounter and have forgotten not everyone lives in an area where this can be problematic.

Found that out one day.. Hit the brakes and went into a full skid thanks to wet leaves.. Thankfully I was moving so fast that pediatricians were passing me (Traffic Jam) so no impacts, no damage, but it was.. educational.

I remember being in Anchorage, AK, one October and first snow was coming. I stated to local "well don't need to worry about the other drivers, they know how to drive on snow", his response "Most forget over the summer!"

Also, ice, snow, banana peels, oil, grease, and many other things are slippery. Too, coffee can be hot, bridge may freeze before road, don't feed the bears, don't eat before swimming.
