Rent out personal toy hauler

Has anyone checked into renting out their rv or toy hauler? Is there special insurance required for doing this? How do you hold someone accountable for damages?

I have been thinking about renting out my trailer but these are a couple of the questions that I have been thinking about. Just seeing if it's worth it.

There is an RV rental company in OKC called American Dream Vacation. They may be in other cities; but they will put your RV on their lot, do all the renting, insurance, storage, etc. and for a fee they handle everything. They do pre- and post inspections of the unit, take care of damage claims, and have any repairs completed. When you want to use your RV, you just book your dates and bring it back clean and ready for the next camper
You might check this out, I understand that some people get their RV paid for by having it rented.

I won't even let family borrow the RV. NO WAY I am letting strangers in it!

Yes, I am serious. I was looking to pay for the camper and possibly make a little coin when not using it. There are several people on Craigslist that advertise renting toy haulers so I was thinking about trying. But it might be more of a hassle than I'm ready for right now.

There's a thread on this from a while back. Essentially said the same thing as most of the posters on here. While its doable, it's not for everyone and the cost of insurance and special licensing (if required) would lead to you having to rent it out a lot in order to break even.

I'm not very sharing when it comes to our rig, but I am taking to a campground and getting it setup for some family of ours next year so they can enjoy a vacation together before the dad returns overseas on his deployment. That's way different than just letting someone take if.

It would also be a good idea to check with the business licensing division of your state government (here it is the Secretary of State's office), AND your county or parish, AND your municipality, to see what licenses you will be required to have to operate a business.
Then check to see if there would be any advantage to forming a Limited Liability Company to own the RV. (yes, the dreaded LLC!)
then, of course, check with other RV rental agencies to see what their rates are.
So, let's see:
Business licenses...
Insurance...
Registration (possibly)...
LLC costs (maybe)...
Accountants fees (can you handle the tax accounting?)

No, I don't think I would want to mess with it...

back in the 70,s I rent6ed out my winn and it was great ,till the guy called and said the engine blew up.

On the insurance issue; when I used my condo in Branson for my personal use only, I had a regular insurance policy. When I put it in a nightly rental program I had to upgrade to a commercial insurance policy, about 20% higher than the personal policy. Check with your agent, he'll know. I really think that will be your biggest issue, you just want to be covered in the event a renter has a serious accident. You might check with the people who rent RV's for a living and get a copy of their contract.
You will probably want to get set up to accept credit cards for payment, plus you can use the card as a backup for damage. Lots to think about but it can be done.

If you decide to rent it out, let us know how it worked and if you had any problems.
I'm guessing it would become a commercial operation, subject to the rules and regulations of a business.
I don't let anyone use our RV, there's too many things that can go wrong.
Some may tell you they have done it with few problems. There is no way I would lend/rent our RV to anyone, including friends and family.
