Yep on the head gaskets. Also, I'd do a full EGR delete and new turbo back exhaust while I was at it with the heads (search powerstroke 6.0 bullet proofing when you have plenty of time to read). Then it's probably gonna be the FICM or something else. Sorry for your troubles my friend, but those 6.0 can become a money pit in a hurry. Hope it works out for well for you!

Lots of recreational reading above - a bullet proofed 6.0 is a fine truck... but it'll cost 5 to 7 grand to get it.

Cedar point NC? just went thru July 4 weekend - I took the ferry to Ocracoke - all 55 ft of my truck and trailer and spent 10 days on the outer banks. Great time!

If it's a 80kmi cherry grampa driven truck, I'd say you could get $15k all day or maybe up to $20k if you find a buyer uninformed about 6liters.
Take that $15-20k and buy, private party, the lowest mileage, newest best condition HD gasser truck you can find from any of the big 3 with the nod going to GM and Ford over Dodge, unless you can find a 4th gen Dodge Hemi.

Did you look at the OP's profile??
His 5er is 13,570# Dry with a GVWR of 16,425#, not a gasser out there I would want to be towing that with.

Well glad you got going relatively economically.
Now, as you said, you're on a fixed income, so IMO you can't afford to "keep" a 6.0 diesel.
Even half the ford nut swingers will tell you to dump it. If it runs you'll do ok selling it. Not great, but blow a hg and spend another 5k bulletproof ing or lose more than 5k selling a broken truck.
And yes, coolant filter needed/that issue. Ficm etc.
or keep it. It'll be like going to the casino every time you drive it. Sometimes you get lucky!

6.0s are now an economical way to get a kick butt diesel truck IF you don't mind spending some bucks and are handy with a wrench. If your mechanic skills are limited to swiping a credit card at the repair shop, do your best to get away from the 6.o.

Probably didn't fix the head gaskets because he's trying to get the OP back on the road as quickly as possible for the least amount possible.

Besides, he said they'd be good for another 30,000 miles. The "prediction" is probably based on experience. If you see a lot of unmolested 6.0's come in with head gasket issues with around 110,000 miles on them, you know that the engine has a tendency to do that. Maybe it will, maybe it won't, but you don't want to be left on the side of the road when some preventative maintenance will keep that from happening for that particular reason.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

Need to know what kind of crystal ball the guy has that says the HG's will fail in 30000 miles? I know that some with tuners and high HP outputs will blow stock gaskets but they will normally be running ARP studs or equivalent. There are lotsa 6.0s out there with fairly high milage and never had issues, but at the same time there are those that have had issues. But to make this forecast is done how? If they are that bad why did he not recommend doing them now while into the engine where he is at? Oil cooler and upgraded egr recommended at same time. Depending on where the guy lives he may not be able to do a delete thus the need for a BPD or some other reputable replacement egr. yes btw I do drive a 6.0 and have done heads and studs when the deltas spiked and the oil cooler and egr needed r&r.

You nailed it. When he called me, he was ordering the kit and said it would be between $1500 to $2000. So, I guess I got a deal. ๐Ÿ™‚

The mechanic told me in another 30,000 miles, I should have the head gaskets done, before they blow.

^This.
Unless you are willing and able to do some real wrenching, 6.0s go from expensive to keep on the road to very expensive.
Combined with a lot of them being higher miles now and having all the "normal" repairs being needed too.

Unfortunately, I am now retired and living on the goverments' generous S.S. benefits and would not be able to afford another truck. This truck only has 80K on it. If I am forced to trade it, we probably would have to also get rid of our Cameo, as I would not be able to tow it and thus end our RV lifestyle early. We will see what happens. The repair shop is supposed to call me back today with what they actually find.

Sorry to hear that. I've had two very expensive issues with my 6.0 that required a new HPOP. The first on was a blown head gasket. The second one was bent valves and metal in the oil when a cam follower came apart. I wouldn't replace injectors unless they're giving you problems.

My 6.0 has 130,000 miles on it and has cost me around $20,000 in repairs.
