I used my new Swipe and Save card for the very first time.

Flying J
(Hwy 99 Exit Merced Ave.)
17047 Zachary Ave
Bakersfield, CA 93308

Price for diesel is $3.999, but any number of other businesses in the same area are advertising diesel for $3.799/gal. So I did get $0.04/gal discount, but that still leaves $0.16/gal over other stations.

Also, convenient its not. I can't swipe my card at the pump. I had to go into the cashier's area where they swiped my card and wanted to know how much money I wanted to spend. In other words I had to estimate how much diesel I needed. Then after pumping, I have to go back inside to get a receipt for the actual purchase.

I've been marking my maps for where these stations are for one of my future trips. The Flying J website publishes prices for each station. So now I can take those prices with me and look for other vendors in the same area and compare.

Its true that getting the supermarket discount is compensated by the food prices in the store, and I don't dispute that.

But since most of my grocery shopping preference is Von's, I definitely take advantage of the fuel discounts.

Of course Von's does not stock everything I want, so I go to about 6 or 7 other stores for special items. Chalk that up to my bizarre food preferences.

Just like people who brag about getting $1 off/gallon from Safeway in my area.....they fail to understand it cost them $1,000 to get that $1off per gallon and a limit of 20/30 gallons. So, if you spend $1,000 they will give you 2-3% in return....and its Safeway, which is extremely overpriced. Shop around an overall after spending $1,000 you will save more than $20-$30.

I tried my GS card tonight for the first time. First attempt I swiped the GS card first and it told me to see the cashier. So I cancelled the transaction, swiped my credit card (that I get cash back on for fuel), then my GS card and received 3 cents per gallon discount. This particular Flying J's fuel prices were cheaper than the two adjacent fuel stops so it worked out quite well.

I did fuel up in Wawona on the way into Yosemite. The price is very high, almost a dollar higher than outside the park, but since it is a Chevron, and I had discount points from Von's, I could use (only) 2 of them for a $0.20/gal discount. I wanted to fill there mainly so I could have full tank before leaving the park. Next time I will plan a fillup as close to the Park as possible.

I'll keep the card, doesn't cost to have it in my pocket! But I'll continue looking for other places to fill. Usually I'll try and hit Murphy's USA, since I try and stay at walmarts anyway when getting there! And if its a walmart owned store, then my walmart discover gets a nickel off.

If you fuel up at Murphy's and have a Wal&*mart or Murphy's Credit cart you get like five or ten (Forget which) Cents off.

If you do not wish to use a credit card...... Go to the store and get a GIFT CARD.. All the time that gets you THREE cents off per gallon, and from time to time it's a dime. (They did not do the dime off last fall like normal).

That is how I fuel my car.. The motor home.. I am shopping a store that gives me cents off and when I fill this beast.. I'll burn up all those "Fuel Points"

Yes Sir! You are correct, I like getting a nickel off! I did recently learn there is two types of stores. Walmart own and not, the discount only works for Walmart own stores.

Hi everyone,

Here are links to the GoodSamClub.com FAQs about the difference in the Good Sam Club Swipe & Save membership card and the Pilot Flying J RV Plus Charge Card. It's great info that I thought you might like to read.

If you are using the RV PLUS card and have to go inside then there is something wrong with your card. I had the same problem and when I talked to their customer service and told him what was going on he said they would send me a new card. The reader was not picking up the strip on the back completely. I have the new card and used it at both the rv lanes and the truck lanes with no problem. I get the 6 cents off the cash price right at the pumps. I just swipe my card at the rv lanes and put in my pin. At the truck lanes I have to hit the truck button and then it will ask for my pin number, fill up, get receipt and on our way.
Except for the convenience of the truck pump start/pay I remain perplexed about the attraction to the GS/Pilot card.

Perplexed because I get 5% cash back on my credit cards. 5% with Amex on the truck pumps (yes I have to go inside) and 5% on all other pumps and stations with my Visa PenFed Cash Rewards card.

FYI Good Sam Fuel discounts vary on gas/diesel: Good Sam Member 4/6 cents Canada 1/1 cents, Good Sam Life Member 6/8 cents Canada 2/2 cents and Good Sam Elite Member 7/9 cents Canada 2/2 cents. Use your fuel, membership and CC rewards for your comparison.

We are talking about using the RV card that takes it right from your bank account.

I have used it at the pumps with no problem. I personally like going to Pilot/Flying J as it is an all in one stop while on the road, even if prices are slightly higher. Of course, if there looks to be a good station right in the area with cheaper prices, I will do that.

That's an even greater reason to use the gas Buddy App. I get to use their money for a month with no charge.
