The RV Name Game or How to Traumatize Your Customer

I have noticed in the past couple of years a trend by RV manufacturers especially Trailer manufacturers of giving really horrible names to their products.

This all reminded me of that George Carlin bit about Baseball vs Football, you know the one...where he intones in a soft and measured tone that Baseball is played in a...field...and then screams that FOOTBALL IS PLAYED ON A GRID IRON.

Well some RV names strike me this way.

Most RV's have pleasant names meant to foster good feelings and images of the outdoors and nature:

Eagle Gulf Stream, Forest River, Mallard (an oldie) Fox, and probably the best of all R Pod. Very cozy and enticing.

Then there is the recent trend to names like these:

Avenger Raptor Violator Warrior et al. These units are usually adorned with slashing, sharp edged and Dark, very Dark graphics that seem more like weapons you'd find on Game of Thrones than anything.

This is a sad turn that may speak to something deeper in our combined social conciseness. Now my guess is that no one chooses an RV based on the outside graphics however I am also sure that the wrong graphics may stop the sale of the offending model given that interiors are a wash.

But this dark and disturbing trend is carried over to the inside as well with blacks and greys and Las Vegas Wh*re house lighting.

I for one will be glad when this trend ceases. Give me the Old Hamms Beer Commercial mythic outdoors any day...Land of Sky Blue Waters...

Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words will cause many to flee in hysteria and demand "safe zones", free from anyone who doesn't agree with their ideology on a particular matter.

I had a KZ toy hauler that was called a Sportsman 22th or something, no S&M macho-rough trade nonsense. I used it for the space, not for hauling machinery with which to tear up the countryside.

Many of these big jocko-homo toy haulers have what I call douche bag seating---very long couches, 6-7-8 places. At which tattooed louts in backwards ballcaps can sit all in a row drinking beer, watching the "big game" on a "flat screen" and performing other manly acts.

I'll buy a HOBO. Betcha no one will want to camp in the spot next to me after that.

Lets not forget the 'Bullett'. Dudley do rights forced a NBA basketball team to change their name. Surprised they haven't gone after Keystone to change the Bullett name.

I'm waiting for a manufacturer to use a model name like VAGRANT, INDIGENT or HOBO. There is probably already a NOMAD.

Words folks. Only words. Sticks and stones.

They are just words on an RV. Not directed at anyone, not representative of anything. If you want to make a purchase decision, judge the people riding in there or whatever based on just that all the more power to you.

Personally i could care less if you ride in on a Vengeance, Dwarf, Bunny Hop or whatever. Enjoy your Rv regardless of the name and if someone is so small minded as to not bother with you because of it then great news!

I never called anyone out, made a blanket comment about people and being judgmental! Maybe you ought to take a look inward and try and see why my comment made you uncomfortable. I made my point about the name of the TH on I believe the first page of this and it wasn't until page 9 that you guys saw it again. Was it because of the grumpy old fart comment??

Chris

I actually agreed with you that your comment about Vengeance made sense as you explained the context.
But I'll stand by my comment as well. And now you've just once again repeated what you have accused others of doing.

Maybe you should "look inward" and see your own judgmental comments. Everything you are asking others to do, you should be doing yourself.
Methinks the shoe fits.

I was enjoying Chris's response too. And it made complete sense regarding the "Ride with a Vengeance". It was that last sentence that was personal in nature that could have been omitted. This has been a fun thread until people get personal.JMHO.

I agree that the names may not mean anything to the owners.
The real question is WHY would manufacturers select that name?
As for Vengeance (which seems to be illustrated here more than most, and I'm the one who originally raised it), just WHY would a dealer use that name? What definition does that name have that has anything to do with camping? Or RVing, or ATVing?

And if a name doesn't mean anything, then can we expect next year's models to include profanities?

The answer to your question is pretty easy. No body is going to load there RZR or Raptor ATV into a powder blue with pink accent toy hauler with the name Powder Puff!!! They want Reds and Blacks with chrome accents with edgy graphics!

As for Vengeance, it doesn't have anything to do with Killing your neighbor it is just like I said in an earlier post
" Ride with a Vengeance" meaning to ride hard and ride long and keep your adrenaline up! That is something you old judgmental farts sitting in your campgrounds complaining about your neighbors don't understand!!

Chris

OK. That explanation makes sense to me.
My next trailer will have the following name:Old Judgmental Fart :B

Funny though, isn't it. I'm being judged as an old judgmental fart who sits in my campground by someone who's calling others judgmental.

I want a camper name that fits the rig itself as well as my persona- If mfgr's were truthful in the description I would 'prolly buy it. Name my next RV...

"Overweight."
