Time to renew registration, $$$ ouch!

Just got the bill to renew the registration on my 06 F-150, $175 ouch! Seems high for a 7 year old truck but guess I just forgot the amount from last year. Got me to thinking, since most of the registration is based upon the value just how much are folks pay for these gorgeous new trucks that roll off the showroom floor at 40, 50 or even $60,000?

We only paid $10K for our (used), 08 TT so it isn't too bad but the new trailers, especially the big dollar fivers must be a serious hit and then there are the Motor Coaches, wow! What do they hit you for a $250K Class A? I guess if you have to ask you cannot afford it, certainly true in my case. No wonder some folks don't mind forking out $40 or $50 a night for RV parks. After the cost of insurance and registration that seems almost reasonable. :S

Hush Dutch, don't mention any additional fees in NY cause Albany never saw a fee they didn't like. Truck, dually is 60 a year plus another 60 for my special plates. Trailer is now $220 a year. Don't even want to think about the 7% sales tax paid at purchase.
Just bought a 14 foot fishing boat, 7% sales tax and another $72 for registration, title fee and surcharge. Nobody knows what the surcharge is supposed to be for.

They doubled the registration in Kalifornia for a couple of years. Owning a fleet of vehicles I literally gave some away. Our mh was 850 the first year and with the doubling, well simple math. 1700. I would never have bought it had I known it was going to double like that. Had a beautiful Winnebago A before this one and it was fine. The registration has gone back to the Normal level which is about 700 a year. Then the toad, the boat, the house. Insurance on the toad, the house, the rv.

We just can't wait to full time. No boat, no house, no house insurance, boat registration and insurance, property taxes on boat and house. And bye bye my native Kalifornia. State of emergency, state of taxation, welfare state. Nanny state. So many hand outs instead of hand ups.

Hate to see ya go - but opens up another campsite for those of us who disagree with your assessment..:R

BTW - tell your out of CA: kin, friends, and folks you meet - how bad it is. Maybe they will stay where they are, ROTFL..:C

It's not an assessment....have you watched the local news lately? Stockton...BROKE.....San Bernardino....Broke....Los Angeles...will be BROKE within two years.

It's in the news....

When we were in Indiana I called the DMV or whatever to get a tempt handicap placard. Can't but there was a selection, for Residents, to punch a number to get an estimate for your registration.
An estimate?

Wow, When I lived in WA. state, they had a registration fee and an excise tax, some motor homes ran $1,200 a year. They have since voted that down, but it appears the state is slowly adding fees to make it up!
I now live in Oregon, car / trucks are about $40 a year, my 5er is based on length and is just about $100 a year.

Maine taxes on my new F-350: 5% sales tax=$2867.50, Excise tax to register for one year=$1,383.00. They used to have a โ€œpollโ€ tax here in Maine on all males, but the ladies didnโ€™t think that was fair so that tax got disbanded.

All drivable vehicles required smog. Fee is based on MSRP and years. It goes down a couple bucks a year as they get older. This is ever year. This is part of the problem why we have so many folks with out of state registration and living and working here. Our county does give a veteran benefit of 125.00 deduction a year but its only for one vehicle. I have heard of folks paying over 800.00 for a brand new reg.

Interesting. So your vehicles fees are based upon MSRP and not the price you paid? If so, what determines the value of a used car? What if you buy a used car/truck from a family member and pay say $2,000.00 for a $7,000.00 car?

My 2011 gmc was $840 the 2nd year, dont remember the first year. Weight fees are part of it but i'm only registered for 21,000 lbs. My wifes car was over $800 also. 2012 Harley was over $300 we have no state income tax and sales tax is 7.75

Something like $275.00 for my 93 Chevy pickup.

$550.00 or so for my 06 Dmax.

Ya I bet you can guess where I live just by the numbers.

High tab fees and your state is still broke.

At least your Booze is cheap! Costco vodka in CA $27, in WA $47.

The state is broke because of the high cost of providing education, medical care and social programs to people that come from a certain country located just south of the state of California. That is why I LEFT and why the state is broke. My wife is retired from teaching 2nd and 3rd grades and guess which pupils received the FREE breakfast and lunches paid for the Federal Gov't? You only get one guess.....

I totally understand. I stay mostly in SoCal in the winters.

It is all really sad to say the least.

It is a tax, and every state does it somewhat different. Oklahoma can be really different.

Our tag fee for non-commercial vehicles is based on neither weight or value. It is based on how long the vehicle has been continuously registered in the state. More seniority, lower cost. Starts at $91 first year of registration, down to $21 17th year and beyond. Age is not relevant, bring in a 30 year old $400 junker from Kansas, start paying for tags at $91.

Motorcycles are $3 higher. Buying a set of plates is extra at the time you receive them. Vanity and affinity plates are extra, affinity plates usually collect an annual "donation" supposed to be why you display them.

Commercial license fees are based on weight, can be lower or higher than private. Farm vehicles, taxis, etc are special categories. We also collect tag fees on all sorts of vehicles never used on public roads, like ATVs.

Relevant to RVs sometimes, non-commercial trailer tags are $7 a year, but optional. We don't really need to tag a trailer, but then our county assessor can tax it as personal property if not tagged as a vehicle. You also might want to tag a trailer if you plan to pull it in a state where they expect to see tags on trailers, because that's they way they do things.

None of this goes to, or is handled by a Department of Motor Vehicles. Tag fees go the the Tax Commission and into the treasury as general revenue.

I can't even renew my car registration until both the TT and car personal property taxes are paid, so $175 would be me getting off easy!

I don't even want to think about how much the folks with the $50k and up rigs are paying if I pay what I do for a 2005 jayco travel trailer. That and my car (a Mustang) run about almost 400. I am not sure what my SO pays for his F150. We both pay our personal property tax separately, and since his is likely more than my car, I pay the TT tax since it is in my name.
