Tioga George Calls It Quits

I saw a posting today from Tioga George that he is calling it quits.

I respect anyone's rights to quit, retire, whatever. I have followed George on daily basis for close to 10 years.

However I am worried about him. Lately he's flipped from the original TiogaGeorge (which was fantastic) to his ChallengeTruth Blog, to his latest, and apparently last, TiogaGeorge2.

George was a great guy to follow and IMHO he blazed the trail and led the way for a lot of people to get into fulltiming that didn't think they could do it.

I'm just worried that over the last few years George is losing it. His followers know about his family struggles the last couple of years, which are awful and I wouldn't want to go through or see anyone else go through, but it seems like lately he's lost it. Bless his heart.

George, I hope you find peace and happiness. You've been through a lot. Best wishes to you.

Having said that, George, please get some help.

I had never heard of George before stumbling across this thread some time ago, and I've been home today as most businesses are closed due to the weather.

I spent a good portion of the morning reading George's posts from Sept 2010 thru the end of that year. It nearly pushed ME into the abyss, and I don't mind telling you my eyes dampened more than once. I cannot imagine any father going thru that and coming out the other end the same. The events of his life during that time makes for some of the most depressing reading I have encountered lately. His emotions are raw, real, and out there for the world to see.

God bless you, George. I hope you find peace.

On Edit: My 'original' post here was a little harsh towards George as I felt like he left us hanging as many of us began to feel like we really knew him.

Goes to show how we can get caught up into something without really knowing the physical person.

I really do wish George the best.

I don't think some of the mean-spirited posts are necessary. I, like others, enjoyed reading his BLOG but George has decided to quit posting on it. That's his prerogative so it's time to get over it folks and move on.

The father/son relationship can be tough.

One of my best friends from high school years just died. His obit failed to mention his only child, a son, as a survivor because of a longstanding relationship problem.

It happens.

My buddy and I knocked on his door when he was passing through Ventura, Ca maybe 7 years ago. He invited us into his rig and we talked with him for several hours. He was very hospitable and even posted our pics on his blog.
When he stopped traveling in the USA the blog didn't interest me as much and I would just occasionally check in. He went through a political phase which I kind of took as anti USA so I stopped all together for a while. After his son passed and his relationship with his other son soured it seemed that it was just too much for George to handle. I can understand why he prefers his privacy. I just pray that he does whatever it takes to make right with his estranged son.

The internet is a great tool, but I just can't understand how people can use it to create human relationships without ever meeting the person in the flesh.

George once said on his blog that he was not the nice person we might imagine him to be. And the truth is that Fathers and Sons is a frightening relationship. Every father is devistated by the death of a son, whether he shows it or not.

About 5 years ago 4 boy students at Sonoma State, after studying late, decided to drive down the mountain road to a store for a late night pizza, and a horrible accident ensued (I don't know why and it doesn't matter) and they all died. There was a large memorial service at the school and one of the fathers got up and said to the students "you don't KNOW how much we love you".

I sent a note to him a while back. Just asking about how he was doing and telling him there was a lot of folks who were wondering what he was up to and were concerned about how he was doing. I got a nasty note back with him telling me he could not believe I thought he owned me something. I was taken aback and could not believe this was the guy we read so much about over the years. I came to the conclusions that he is not a nice guy, that he was faking a lot of his emotions about how great and safe it was in Mexico and was milking the blog for readership and hits on the google ads. The guy we saw in his blog is definitely not the guy he is in private correspondence. I think he lost it when the son did himself in and it finally dawned on him why and he has gone over the edge.

Hpe it's in one of those links.

I stumbled on Tioga George a few years ago, when we first started RVing. Read lot of his stuff, learned a lot.

Cheers and Joy George! Keep it between the lines, and may your black tank never fill up.

I see no evidence that there is a lack of respect here, in the least. Remember, you admit to having never followed his work, so it's a little hard to have the same perspective as some of us do.

As it lightly touched upon, at one point he was basically dead broke, and couldn't continue his journey. He was supported by small donations, provided by loyal followers (myself included) until he establish an income stream by using his blog to generate income, also provided by loyal followers. For some, it's a bit of a shock to go from supporting a guy who enjoys and appreciates his followers, to one who needs to note that he has a secret blog, and nobody is welcomed. So, if George wants privacy now, that fine. But with little background, it's a bit of a stretch for you to deride members here as "pouting" and not "respecting his privacy". I wish George all the best, and deeply appreciate the many years of time and effort he put into a great blog.

P.S Please take a moment to clean up your post. Don't know if it's an issue with your auto-correct or what? But a few letters seemed to have not made the trip.
