traveling with firearms

okay so i am going fulltiming may 1st . plan on wintering in texas next winter . so most of my travels this season will be out west ,,,as much as i can see . my question is about firearms . does anyone have any tips of traveling with them ,,,,, legally and safely,,,, i have the nessersary license.

I flew to California this winter with my handgun in a checked bag. I kept it locked in the case and in the back of the car until I drove out of state and into NV where I put it in my pocket. No issues at all.

If you have a cc permit and are carrying in your vehicle in a lot of states that do not recognize your cc permit... NY included,... it is legal to have a weapon in a locked box stored away from you...trunk or far back seat but not the clove box or console. The ammo has to be in a separate locked box too. Thing is you must pass through state without spending the night there. You can stop for gas and food but you must keep going and you must be legal cc permit for the state you came from (home ?) and the state of your destination. CC laws change a lot so keep up with them..

I can tell you that my husband, who has a CC, was sitting at a red light when someone tried to car jack his vehicle. The sight of a pistol barrel sent the idiot down the road. I hate to admit it, but with the crazies out there, more and more of our friends, acquaintances and co-workers are arming themselves. None of them would pull a weapon unless there was no other choice. And yes, we know the consequences. But better that than death............

You are probably about one zero short on those estimates. Using a weapon on another human being is going to result in a long, long legal process and lawyers charge by the hour.
In my years using these forums there has never been an actual, provable instance where a camper or RVer actually used a concealed handgun to defend themselves from some terrible fate. There have been a few people who claimed to have pulled their weapon and then someone backed away, but we don't know if that was actually a crime in progress or someone looking for Grey Poupon. Someone knocking on your door or walking through your campsite is a long way from a home invasion. Like I have said before, if you are so afraid or RVing and so incapable of making good campground choices that you need a deadly weapon at the ready 24/7/365 maybe you should consider another hobby.

I believe you are mistaken. Check the law. The disqualifier is that if you have a felony record.

I agree......If you have to use it, your life will NIVER be the same again. LOTS of bad stuff will happen to you.

However, the alternative was DEATH for you and/or your loved ones. That is the only reason most of us would use a gun.

So, you take your choice. You would rather be dead. I would prefer to defend my family, even though it will NOT be nice afterwards.

The old saying that "I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6" may well apply in a serious situation that might harm you and/or your family. Thought provoking though. A good alternative, that I also carry, is 10% OC pepper spray. That would always precede a gunshot.

I would not do that without a CCW. Without a permit and the weapon is accessible and concealed is just asking for trouble. Without a CCW you should treat the gun just like I would during hunting season. Unloaded and cased in the trunk or very back hatch area if a SUV.

I think the Tip for traveling state to state from me will be a little internet research.
Step 1 identify which states accept your CCW and not worry when traveling through or staying in them.
Step 2 when planning your travel determine what states you will be traveling through and research their laws. If need be revise your route so be it.

I'm in AZ so things are easy but when I travel into Ca the firearms stay at home.

I have heard it said that your TC or trailer is considered a home so a different set of laws apply but have not researched it.
