Truck Stops verus Wal Mart for Fuel?

I'm about to embark on my first RV trip...Florida to Maine. It seems to me Wal-Marts with gas stations offer good pricing especially if you have their card or gift cards. Since you guys have the experience is that accurate or am I better off with truck stops. I'd rather not sign up for another credit card. Thanks.

I always love this one.
Just sit at the local donut shop early in the morning and watch the gas tanker go from one convenience store to the next store AND from gas station to gas station filling up their tanks all from one tanker!!

Which btw when you see them filling up tanks at a gas station...run don't walk away from fueling up at that station that day. :W

The difficult in-out issue applies not just to Walmart but to anywhere you take an RV, so you always need to "eye" the place before getting into trouble. And there is no limit on gallons. Best to buy a Walmart-Rand McNally to find out where Wally has fuel.

Purchase your fuel wherever you like whether it's by price, convenience or access to the pumps.

*If* you think it needs an additive - keep your favorite handy!

While I know you said you didn't want another credit card, Pen Fed Credit Union offers a Visa card that gives you 5% back on all fuel purchases. We like this because no matter where we fuel, we get the discount. When diesel is close to $4 a gallon, that .19 a gallon discount is nice.

Most Wal-marts that I've seen will not accommodate my RV towing my car. Just make sure you don't yourself into a pickle that you can't drive out of.

I filled up in SC @$3.32 a gallon at the end of Mat (27? 28??) I have been in LI NY for over a week and prices here are running $4.09 to $4.25 a gallon. I bought a 95 gallon AUX tank for convince but at these rates the savings may pay for the tank. So far I I have not used the AUX tank and topped off the truck tank by buying fuel for $3.45 to $3.56 a gallon in VA and PA. but now I am going to have to start using the fuel in my AUX tank. I believe I may be able to make it home to SC without buying fuel but the beauty of an AUX tank is that not only does it allow you to choose a station with easy access it may in some case save you almost $1 a gallon.

What most people do not understand,,, there is no off brand fuel.. It is manufactured by the big boys and doled out at the distribution centers to the convenience stores. You better hurry, the ten cents off expires on July 1 and then it is back to the three cents off. I filled by DP the other day at a local WM for $3.45 a gallon. Cheapest diesel I have found in a while. It is a little tight, I just go early before the crowds get there.

I've never heard of a limit at Wal-mart, but then they aren't giving you thirty cents off a gallon.

For the discounted price using the gift card, does WalMart limit you to a certain # of gallons? I ask because I generally use Fred Meyers for fuel. With $3-$400 in groceries every month, we get $.030 to $0.40 off per gallon, but they only allow you 35 gallons.

I keep a Wallycard just for fuel. Not all Wal Marts have Diesel fuel, but I buy there when I need fuel and there's one handy In and out is no problem for a truck camper.

Thanks...I've plotted which Wal-Marts have gas along my route...so that is probably the first option.

Apparently Walmarts have fueling stations. I'm not saying it's not true, I have just never seen one. I have seen a couple of Sam's Clubs with them but you have to have membership.
My point is that I wouldn't want to make a long trip allowing myself to only get gas at a Walmart store. Allow yourself options. Convenience and RV friendly access to fuel pumps are a lot more important to me. I have been impressed with Flying J

Anyplace with an easy access and exit are OK by me. Some truck stops have the general store at the end of the bays for RVs and cars, Big Rigs use the truck lane. This makes exit difficult if people are parked along the doorway. I look or an angled island or and open end to the bay. Often the gas station near the truck stop has easier access for RVs than the truck stop. My only problem with any shopping center fuel stop is that you must often travel the parking lanes to access the fuel station. Some are rather tight.
