Hi all...need to spend the nite on the road tomorrow...have allstays wallmart onp app...every walmart in knoxville area that allstays says is ok tells me either they dont have a policy or not ok...but they will add that people do it all the time...is this sop....thx...bo

Its always best to call each store and talk to the store manager...only then will you know the truth.

Local WM Super Center is located close to I-40 & I-240, and not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Has a city river park on two sides, and Cheddar's restaurant in the same lot. Cafeteria & Chinese buffet close by, and several fast food places. Very, very pleasant. RV overnighting was fine for several years. Heck, _I_ even spent the night there once when my then-fiancee and I were arguing!

But then a few of the 'RV homeless' & 'van/car dwellers' became full-time residents there (one old C didn't move for 'way over a month), and now we're all banned. Sucks, but there it is. I really can't blame WM.

Was discussing that with some folks here in the park today.. Wal*marts fall into 4 groups when it comes to overnight parking.

Neighborhood Wall*marts (min Wall*marts) do not have enough parking for RVers or truckers to overnight, Im' sorry but the store is just too small.. Very few of those exist.

Most all allow overnight parking, UNLESS

They are in an area where the campground owners Association (A member of said association hosts these forums by the way) has petitioned the government to ban such overnighting and require all RVs to park in LICENSED campgrounds. More on that in a paragraph or two.

ONE, and I mean ONE Wall*mart has a bad neighbor.. And as a result of this neighbor (A used car dealer I believe) they have had to ban overnight parking. That applies to ONE store in the entire chain and it is not their fault either.

NOW: the more on campground v/s Wall*mart

ONe night I pulled into a truck stop.. Feeling was.. shall we say... not good. A campground was perhaps a quarter to half mile down the road.. 20 or 25 bucks for the night, full hookup, no generator fuel consumption, Dinner and breakfast "At home" (Perhaps 10 bucks spent between the two of us) so 30 or 35 for the night total.

Id have spent that much on dinner and breakfast for 2, plus gas for the generator on top of that. The campground was less expensive.

Still.. I wally-dock.

It is good to read the reviews. One of two reasons cause Wally Worlds to deny overnight parking.

The most common is that the local municipality ends up banning overnight parking in order to get another source of income from unwary visitors. Same stuff as a lowered speed limit sign hidden behind bushes, but aimed at RV-ers.

The less common reasons is that the WM itself either has an issue of 18-wheelers or RVs overcrowding the parking lot, the WM is in a bad neighborhood, or the parking lot isn't owned by the WM, so they can't set the rules.

Yeah, I don't get it sometimes! If questions were limited to only question that have never been asked before, not sure if there would be any posting. Also seen the "just do a search" If I read the topic and I'm not interested, I don't read it. Sometimes I only read the poster question/statement and decide I'm not interested. But I do alot more reading than posting! 😮

If there are signs saying not to park, it may be the local police enforcing it, not the WM manager, so keep looking elsewhere.

Yes - on "Have a backup plan"!

Mgr said, "no problem". (Pismo Beach, CA)

Security came along at closing time and told the two RVs there, he is/was wrong.
Gave info where overnighting was OK, less than one mile away.

At another Wally - if you pull into pk lot before closing time, no need to ask - the mgr and another employee come out to you, with the no overnighting message. (The Dalles, OR)
They also informed where overnighting was OK.

In both cases, city ordinance prohibited overnighting.
Some that were OK at one time - change their tune, and request a "no parking" city ordinance due to the previously mentioned "RV homeless" taking advantage of Wally.

So refresh your Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared"..;)

Walmart overnight is banned in our city by local ordinance, has nothing to do with a WalMart policy. You'll find this in some cities and not in others. Best bet is to call the manager of the WalMart you're looking at. Frankly I'm glad the city banned it in our city; some of the rigs that used to park there looked like the could not get underway under their own power and one end of the parking lot was beginning to look like a junk yard.

ASK THE MANAGER when you get there, and do have a backup plan just in case the answer is no.
