You know, the most memorable places you have enjoyed a great meal while you've been on the road. #1. We went to Gaidos in Galveston TX. and I had a fantastic seafood platter, the wife had their prime rib. Fantastic. Nice place with interesting history. The bread pudding for dessert was the absolute best I have EVER had.

#2 was Taste of Louisiana Café in Denham Springs LA. Its a little town outside of Baton Rouge. Here I had a smoked sausage Po'boy and wife had a French dip sandwich. Now, this place is a cute little hole in the wall in a quaint antique store filled down town type of burg. What an unexpected treat this place was. Food was fantastic and the people were wonderful. Dessert was a blue berry cheese cake parfait and wow, I wanted to lick the cup it came in. People at a table over from us heard us saying how good it was and tried to order one. We got the last one.

So what gems have you found??

When in the Keys, I always make sure to visit Keys Fisheries in Marathon. It's an open air place right on the water with picnic tables under cover, next to the fishing boats dock. Super fresh and good. A great place to watch sunsets over the water and have a bite to eat.

One of our favorite restaurants is in Buellton, Ca. called AJ Spurs, yummy. We split a dinner of BBQ ribs and order an X-tra Plate which includes all the sides you would get with a full on dinner.

Actually one more place. The Green Flash on Captiva Island in Florida. The Conch Chowder was the best I have ever had anywhere. On Captiva another must go place is the Bubble room. Portions are scary large. Their specialty is their cakes. When you order a piece of cake you get at least a 1/4 of a cake.

Patti's in Grand Rivers, Ky (off I-24).

Get the 2" pork chop dinner, including rolls and strawberry butter. Somehow make sure to leave room for pie, which is reason enough to stop by for even if you've already had dinner somewhere else.

Another terrific place is Knoth's BBQ, also in Grand Rivers, between the lakes on US 62. They specialize in pork, but also have beef (if you must). Absolutely wonderful - they've been around since 1965. I detour off the interstate just to stop by.

IHOP in small town Alabama, not too long ago.

Late on a Saturday night we pulled into an IHOP for dinner. Aside from the two of us there was a large and rowdy crowd of 10 or 12 young adults who had been partying the night away. They were loud, obnoxious and rude to the lone waitress. She was an older woman who moved a little slowly and we could tell should have retired a long time ago. With a forced smile and grace she put up with the snot nosed brats. As they walked out the door she picked up the tab. We watched from across the restaurant, she bowed her head, closed her eyes as her shoulders sank. The kids had stiffed her on the tip.

The DH nodded when I slid a $100 bill under the ketchup bottle.

Good meals come in many forms.

Very, very nice of you. Brought a tear to my eye.

One of my all time favorites is Redamak's in New Buffalo, Mi! This thread shows why I love Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Stop looking at the chains and find the "mom and pop shop"!
