Where to buy an RV mattress like the bunk mattresses?

Our mattress suck. We hate it. It came with the TT.

Anyway, one day I had to sleep on the bunk bed and it is way better. So where can we buy one like that but for the "queen" bed they have in the travel trailer? I realize it's basically a hard foam with fabric but at the same time I don't want to build a custom one myself. I learned a lot of DIY stuff with the trailer but here is where I draw the line 🙂

I don't want regular mattresses as well - they usually are more expensive and they weigh a lot more. My TT is already heavy as it is.

We added firm foam mattress toppers from J C Penney - they are very firm! I trimmed them with a serrated knife.

Our local mattress company, (Yankee) tells me they custom make many for RV's. Takes them about a month to work a new on into the schedule.

Most major cities have mattress manufacturers. Most mattress manufacturers will custom make any dimension and style mattress you specify, and usually at a cheaper price than you will pay in any store.

Wait, Walmart mattresses are 80x60 so they don't fit our short queen bed (maximum we can get is 77.5").Walmart link here.

You can cut them with an electric knife, but ours worked fine - they can be squeezed into a smaller space. We had a short queen in our Rockwood TT. It did make it tight when we had to raise the bed to get to the storage underneath, but we did that seldom, so it was no problem. The upside was that it did hold the sheets on there pretty well since it was so tight.

Merrykalia, do you think those foams are firm?

Yes, they have some that are firm You need to read the descriptions really well. I think ours is a Spa Sensations, 8" Memory Foam Mattress and it is soft for the first couple inches, then pretty firm. You don't sink down into it.

It is a pretty good cheap version of our TempurPedic that we have at home, but at 1/10th of the price!!

And, as someone said above, it comes compressed, so move your old mattress out, then open the box and place the plastic, vacuum wrapped mattress on the platform, then cut the plastic off. That way, you won't have to move it and maneuver it around. Makes it much easier.

Thanks for your replies. I will start with Walmart next weekend (easy to return) and let you know how it goes.

We used MERLO MATTRESSES in central Illinois. They manufacture mattresses according to YOUR specs. Thickness, firmness, dimensions.

Dont remember the cost anymore, but it was well worth it for us.

We ordered Bed in a Box online at the suggestion of others on this forum. They make an RV Queen in a 9" or 11" depth with or without gel (for coolness). The 11" deep is more firm. We love it! Came shipped in a box. Weighed 70 lbs. We took out the old mattress, brought the box in the RV, took the shrink wrapped mattress out of the box, cut the wrap and voila! instant bed. Not cheap but well worth it. We got ours on sale.

Check in with a local mattress store. A lot of mattresses are made locally because they are bulky to ship across the country.

The first thing I did when we purchased our 5er was to order a new memory foam mattress from Walmart. It's wonderful!! $200 for a queen. It weighed 56 pounds prior to filling it with air (it came compressed).

So how much did it weigh when you added the air? 🙂

I've been sleeping on a higher end air mattress in my RV for 15 weeks or so as I travel around. It is the most comfortable mattress I have ever had. Brand is Aero Bed. Has a built in air pump and only takes a minute or 2 to fill. Probably doesn't weigh more than 10-15 pounds.
However, if you're going into the or driving through mountains, you better remember to let a lot of air out. As you gain altitude, the air inside expands. Don't want any loud surprises while driving.

The original mattress was the worst mattress I've ever tried to sleep on. We tried a 4" topper but finally gave up and ordered a 13" Memory Foam mattress from Sam's club. Comes all rolled up just put it on the bed and slit the wrapper and it unrolls and puffs up. Easy, pesy, well almost, it was a bit awkward to move by myself.
