2015 GMC Sierra Denali-catastrophic fuel pump failure

Had a catastrophic fuel pump failure in our 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 2500HD Diesel......lost all power steering, brakes, etc. Dealer wants $12000 to repair! When the pump fails, metal shavings go thru entire fuel line, etc
After researching online, GM knew about this (CP4 fuel pump) issue before we bought our new truck in 2015!
We were lucky this happened at our seasonal campground & not while towing our 5th wheel in traffic.
Posting this as a warning to all of you with a GM diesel 2011-2016

Hubby out of town, so I thought I would reply..... truck has around 74,000 miles on it, purchased new in July 2015.....towed to a different dealer, waiting to hear their verdict on warranty coverage....I think this should be 100% covered, and am trying to get get covered....talked to GM Customer Care twice-useless! I knew more about the truck. GM Cust Care Supervisor called me yest...."apologized, saying NOTHING they can do"
This truck has been 'babied' & maintained, in order to be in the best shape to pull 5th wheel! I have the GM Service Bulletin dated Sept 2014 in regards to this issue with these pumps....we purchased a year later. They knew about the issue in 2014! All of this has been conveyed to GM.

First, sorry to the OP for your troubles, hope it works out for you.

We thought about a duramax back in 2010 when we ordered my truck, but our usage just did not make sense, so gas motor for us. Then I start reading about issues with the CP4 pumps and cost of repairs. WOW.

Am I missing anything here?

Looks like GM is the only one to drop the CP4 in the last three years...

Well known issue, fan grenading? First time I have heard of that. Good thing your in a 92 Dodge, they never break. Crazy things happen, no matter what emblem is on the hood. There are motors that are notoriously bad, 6.5 not too good, IH 6.0 and 6.4 really bad. The Duramax is a proven engine. As is the Ford 6.7 and the 5.9/6.7 Cummins. Things happen and the odds are against it being catastrophic, even with the CP4 (like around 2% as I last read), but when it happens to you, the odds don't mean much.

I don't know if it relates but I use GM fuel filters and I let the dealer change it. I learned on an LLY 5500 that I was using NAPA fuel filters on. Lost an injector, and washed a cylinder. Related? I don't know but I have heard from engine builders when I was looking to rebuild it, that it is best to stay with the GM fuel filters. I think having documented fuel filter changes with OEM filters matters on issues like this. Just a suggestion regardless if its a GM CP4 or another OEM.

The complete set of parts for this repair is about $3500 from InjectorsDirect, the rest is going to be about 40 hours labor. Usually the cab is removed from the chassis for this repair due to access difficulty.

There is a new upgrade on the market for Duramax that will let you change the CP4 pump to a CP3. The article was in Trailer Life magazine, one of the last two issues. Might be worth checking out if have to come out of pocket

Until the OP provides more info, weโ€™re all just speculating at the cause, warranty , miles, etc.
could have 300k on it and be so far out of warranty or it could be a crappy dealer hosing him on warranty or it could be bad fuel and a call to the insurance company is in order.

Now why would you want to ruin a thread that is bound to explode with common sense? :B

I think GM used the CP4 through 2016, and switched in 2017+. I might be off a year, though.

When I got my current truck in 2015 the Ram was the only one without the CP4 and that played a fairly significant role in my choice. If I were buying a 2019+ diesel, it would be a D-max despite a few things I don't love about it.

WOW! I am sorry you have that expensive repair staring at you, but perhaps you can get warranty coverage.
