Anyone towing conventional with 2013-15 Ram 2500

I've heard some talk on other forums about the factory hitches breaking on the 4th generation ram trucks when towing and I'm curious if yall have anything to report. I've had trouble located a definitive guide that tells the load rating of the factory hitch. It is noted as a class 5 and it accommodates a 2.5 inch ball mount. I'm gonna run a WDH with my trailer but I'd still like to feel comfy that this factory hitch is up to the task.

I will add this though. Our first trip with the new truck was this weekend. When we got home I noticed that the receiver pin lock was slightly bent. I am using the 2 1/2 to 2 inch reducer that Ram supplied. I realize this has nothing to do with the hitch itself, just sharing the info. I'll be ordering a 2 1/2 inch shank before our next trip.

650 lbs of tongue weight you will be fine. You might even find that you don't need a WDH... if you don't already have one.

I'm gonna be pulling my trailer home on Wednesday and I haven't got a WD hitch ordered yet. The dealer wants twice what I can buy a hitch for so I may pull it home without and then order one. I'm going around 100 miles with it but it's all good smooth roads. My tongue weight should be around 650 or so I'm guessing

You are right, I have had a hard time finding exact numbers for the Ram hitch. I know that it is a class V hitch. By definition a class V hitch has up to 1200 lbs weight carrying load and 1700 lbs weight distribution load.

A class IV hitch has up to 1000 lbs weight carrying load and 1400 lbs weight distribution.

By deduction you can therefore assume that the Ram class V hitch is rated somewhere between 1001 and 1200lbs weight carrying (no WDH) and 1401 to 1700 lbs with a WDH.

On my last trip I didn't use the WDH bars to see how it would feel. I felt a little more porpoising, but nothing bad at all. For short trips, I may forego the WDH bars. For longer trips I would still use them. My tongue weight is around 1105 lbs.

Thanks for the replies. I feel a little better knowing that they seem to be performing good. I had read somewhere that they beefed the hitches up on the 13-15 models.

I have about 1400# on my '13, and haven't had any issues at all.

Although not a Ram, my OEM 12.5K lb 2" Ford receiver started egging out the hitch pin hole after about 75K miles towing 11.5K lbs. I was able to weld thick plates to the outside of the receiver and redrill the hole. The actual hitch held up well, but when I upgraded to a Torklift SuperHitch the OEM looked like a toy compared to my upgrade. BTW: The SuperHitch includes a reinforced hitch pin hole which my OEM did not. My chassis cab Ram did not come with a receiver, so I cannot comment specifically about Ram's OEM receiver. I went with another SuperHitch on this truck.

Only issues have been class 3 hitches installed on 1500 Rams and sales person mistakenly telling buyers they are class 4 hitches.

I use the 2.5" adapter that came with the truck with my 2" Equalizer. My tongue weight is only about 800-850lbs, but I haven't had any issues so far.

It's rated for 1800 lbs. No issues with mine as of yet.

2-1/2" WD shanks are available, so you could eliminate at least half of that slop.

I haven't towed much with mine yet but I've noticed the design looks a lot like the OE hitch on my old 2500HD that was know to have issues. I think it's odd there's no rating sticker on it too.
Mine also has a ton of play in it that I don't really care for.

I have a 13 2500 and pull a 30' 9k toyhauler. I have not had any issues with the hitch breaking. I have however bent a hitch pin, I believe this is due to the additional play that the 2" to 2.5" adapter creates.
