Can't find TC meeting my simple need.

My present camper (hard side)shows signs of decay and structural failure. I've had it for over 15 years during which time it spends over 4 months annually on the road averaging over 12,000 miles per year. I travel well equipped for backpacking, fishing, hunting, prospecting, and long-term off-grid living - a LOT of gear. My present camper has an east/west convertible dining/sleeping area. This configuration allows me to use the upper bunk, and under the lower bunk for gear. Instead of a shower/commode there is a closet - also gear filled.

I want a similar floor plan/setup. My search has found no one offering a lower, east/west, bed for 2 adults (full size 54"x76" strongly preferred).

More specifically, I want a camper 80-86" wide; 8' to 8' 6" long; jacks on each corner; no basement (for lower clearance and lighter weight); no slide-out; no bathroom facilities; well insulated for winter/year-round use; appropriate refrigeration, stove, lighting, heater; desirable, but not absolutely necessary features include A/C, space for generator, outside shower; interior height about 6'6".

So, does anyone know of anyone making such a camper, or of a manufacturer able/willing to modify or semi-finish an existing camper (shell) to suit my need. If necessary, I'll consider a used camper.

Thanks

Eureka - I like the aluminum construction, and the lower seating/bunk conversion possiblity is ideal. However, the cabover though is only 2' - too little storage there - and outside width of only 6' 6" is a loss of interior space for both storage and sleeping my 6' 4" barefoot frame. I'll bet my truck won't fit between the jacks, even if they are of the fold out type. I've had to ad jack spacers on my 80" wide camper to clear the jacks.

The cabover is available in 24 inch and 48 inch length. Inside wall to inside wall is 6'-3.5". Our Ram 2500 2WD has room to spare between the fold out front corner jacks but it sounds like your truck is particularly wide. I have 3 videos available if you haven't already seen them (Note: mute the audio for the first 2 minutes on the first video if you don't care for quirky music) ๐Ÿ™‚

Would you feel better if I called it a luxury shell camper? ๐Ÿ˜„

For something that is 4 season Bigfoots are great. You can find them in Montana and Maine on Rvtrader. Might want to give them a call and see if they can custom fab something for you.

Still, a luxury price for a luxury camper.

That's $45k for just their shell camper. :R

I really like there design. But seeing this qoute "Most custom builds will start around $115,000." puts it out of reach of most customers.

Some good suggestions. Thanks.

Yeah I know my needs aren't where the market is - thus my problem of finding one. Present camper is a Ranger - not very active these days, and I want a few upgrades - but I plan on visiting them to see if repair is practical. Truck is CC LB 3500 SRW. No, I'm not looking for used - I'm looking for a camper that will sleep 2 and pack a lot of gear - quality, not age is important. Looking at Capri, it strikes me I might be able to modify a dinette area for sleeping if the opposite side is narrow enough to leave reasonable isle width. Northstar looks interesting - I'll make a visit. The Alaskan, any drop/soft sided camper, would have to be driven in the raised position because of the gear stored in the bunk, and the necessary/double wall thickness needed for winter use is undesirable.

That's the way they used to make truck campers..East/West top bunk in either full cabover or 1/4 cabover w/pullout bunk..East/West dinette up against the cab giving a full dinette and storage under when put down into a bed...A big 'ol closet in the rear you could store stuff or some used it as a porta potti room and wheel well storage as well..

I also would be interested in a newer low profile unit like this and have looked alot but the closest I have found is the Capri or Eureka.

I hope yu find one and if you do,let us know...I am interested.

Norhtstar built an east/west cabover on my Laredo. It was a good match for my standard cab truck and reduced overall weight a bit.

Your needs are unique. 99.99% of truck camper buyers are looking for all the comforts of home. Maximum living space, bathroom, fridge, etc.. Manufacturers have to make what sells, not what they can sell one of as a stock item.

Northstar or Capri can work with you to build a custom new camper, but if you're looking for used, you're out of luck unless you can find an identical camper to the one you have, or you are willing to gut and remodel a camper to suit your unique needs.

What brand and model of camper do you currently have?
