Marvel Mystery Oil

Any one ever add this to fuel in your diesel trucks?

The only reason I ask is my 07 Duramax developed a light surging at idle. Researching the issue it is a fairly common problem especially with trucks using low sulphur fuel. The Fuel Pressure Regulator is the culprit. Keep in mind I know nothing about diesel engines but I found a home remedy for this exact (surging) problem. The fix says to drop a quart of two-cycle oil in the fuel tank to help lubricate the regulator.

So I tried it and the problem (surging) immediately went away! Not sure if it is a permanent fix but service center said changing the regulator is a $1000+ job!

I have used Marvel Mystery Oil for years in my motorcycles but never thought about putting in my diesel fuel every so often. I used a regular two-stroke oil this time but would consider the Marvel in the future.

Any thoughts?

It's all relative. Gasoline is hazardous when inhaled or ingested. Depending on who you believe, food that contains smoke flavoring is hazardous (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons).

Whenever a diesel suddenly stalls or starts acting crazy when running, the fuel injection pressure regulator may need to be replaced. The part for a Duramax is $308 at RockAuto.com, and it's a 10 minute replacement.

I would never put 2 stroke oil into a diesel, as it's essentially non-detergent 20 weight oil. The preferred fuel additive for diesels is Kleen, and it's available at all auto parts stores. It's a cleaner and cetane booster.

I have no idea how effective Marvel Mystery Oil is in diesels. I've never heard anything bad about it in gas tanks and oil pans, however. I think I'd stick with Kleen for diesels.

It looks like MMO is mostly "fine white mineral oil" with a little benzene and petroleum distillates.

When in doubt, google the MSDS for the product you are wondering about, then decide if you want THAT running through your engine!

I had a valve sticking in my old jeep a few years ago,

an older fellow at napa told me to try 1 qt. of MMO: 1/2 in the fuel tank and 1/2 in the crankcase.

he said, if that does not loosen up the sticky valve, then pull the head.

within a minute of run time after adding the MMO the valve freed up and that was 3 years ago, still running good.
I add the MMO at every oil change.

that said: I would not add MMO to the fuel tank on my dodge diesel.
I have used diesel kleen and opti-lube, both keep the truck running great. opti-lube is a bit pricy as I have to order and pay shipping.

I have used Marvel Mystery Oil a lot in past years on very old and very well-worn vehicles with reasonable success. However, due to the complexities of modern diesel truck engines, I would not even consider it.

Biodiesel definitely quieted down my 2005 Powerstroke. When I didn't fill with B5, I would add a cetane booster to the tank but it was never as quiet as with the biofuels.

I tried Marvel Mystery Oil as lube for my Chainsaw Chain, it was a lousy lubricant for that sure as heck would not let it anywhere my truck. Spend the money on a quality fuel additive, like Schaeffer's Diesel Treat 2000, read the technical data sheet to see what it's supposed to do.

If your 2007 was the classic you could get away with dumping "home remedies" in the tank. However I see your truck is the 2007.5 with the lmm motor, and as gmc6000 pointed out you need to be much more careful with a dpf equipped truck. Opti-lube would be my vote as well.

When I had my 05 duramax, I always added a quart of 2 stroke oil on every fill up. Truck ran much smoother and was more quiet. Never had any issues. I would not, however, use it on the newer diesels with the DPF.
