Oil change SHOCK

A friend of mine called yesterday and asked how much I was paying to get my Powerstroke diesel pickups oil changed and fuel filters changed. I told him I buy my filters ( motorcraft) on line for like $90 with shipping, oil at Wal Mart for around $60 and I change it all myself , so around $150 dollars.

He told me the reason he was asking was his wife took their 2011 Ram 3500 diesel to Big O tires and told them she wanted a oil change plus filters....oil, fuel and air. About an hour later she was told.... your trucks done... went to pay the bill and it was $415 for that truck to be serviced. I have never seen a service bill for a semi oil change that high... Told him thanks for the heads up on that I dang sure won’t be doing any business with Big O !! $415 for an oil change and filters on a pickup........No way !

Oil change on my Duramax is about $50.00 if I do it myself.

If I take it to my selling dealer, it's $0.00.

I used to take it there all the time until I moved 300 miles away.

Just FYI, the Valvoline lube centers will use your oil and filter and charge you $33 for doing the service including NC tax. Similar chains may offer that service as well.
I buy Mopar oil filters at Walmart and Rotella when on sale at Sam's Club.
The local Dodge dealer used to sell 4 packs of oik changes for $200 if used within 2 years so check around. Sadly they sold out and the new owners no longer sell the package. They did honor my remaining oil change however so kudos to them.

FYI the MOPAR oil filters are cellulose, good but NOT the best! FleetGuard makes the MOPAR filters. The best is the FleetGuard Stratapore that should be used if going longer on changes.

Well first of all the OP, was talking oil change, oil filter, engine fuel filter, chassis fuel filter and air filter. While all of these should take a shop less than an hour to do the parts cost can run a little bit.
The two fuel filters $100+
Air filter $30
Oil $30 to $90 depending on Dino or synthetic (12 qts.)

As I stated earlier if bought at some parts houses fuel filters could be priced close to $200 for both fuel filters.
This is why I do my own service.

His friend has a 2011. There is not a chassis filter. Only engine mount.

Factory filters for my D16 Volvo engine, 2 oil filters 1 by pass filter 1 fuel filter and 1 water separator cartridge $104.00. Are the filters for newer diesel pups really that expensive??

Maybe you should actually reread the original post. The OP commented on what had happened to his friend, not him. He thought it was ridiculous. And many agreed, and many have commented that if a person so chose to go where the OP's friend went, then the prices would probably be commensurate to the OP's friends experience.

So it wasn't an issue per se, it was a comment from the OP on how ridiculous he considered the cost.

Prices can vary A LOT for similar services. I get a pretty good price at the dealer when I buy in packs. I just bought 6 oil changes + tire rotations for $440 from my local Ram dealer (2500 Ram 6.4 Hemi). Works out to around $75/change. The supplies alone cost at least $60. Also, going to dealer is nice so I can get software updates and recalls done. Also, keeps the warranty gods happy and, IMO, is a plus at time of resale.

I have my local Ford dealer do my oil changes. $84 for oil/filter change using Motorcraft syn blend. They check several items, tire tread depth, brake pad thickness, etc. And they rotate the tires.
When I first started going there, they would always call and recommend doing other services like fuel filter changes. I would always tell them no, I do those myself. They don't even call me anymore because they know I will decline.
Changing the oil myself would cost me nearly that much plus having to deal with the mess and old oil disposal.
Also, I buy my fuel and air filters on Amazon. Fuel filters are $50 give or take for Motorcraft. Last ones I bought were $44 because they were open box, but new and still sealed in plastic wrapping.
BTW...I get a free oil change for every 4 services I pay for.

Yes, it sounds crazy high, but I'm with the others about having to see the invoice first.

I know the owners of my local repair garage, and they have people come in asking (for example) "do whatever my car needs right now". So they go into the owners manual and go through all the maintenance checks and changes according to the mileage. People come back, are shocked at the multi-hundred dollar bill. "I thought all it needed was an oil change?!". Happens often, even with the shop practically grilling customers on what exactly they want done and are willing to pay for.

Do the fuel filters need changing every oil change?

It's been 6-7yr since we had a diesel but if I did it myself, it was about $50 (oil & filter).

It was a messy job because the giant oil filter was positioned so it would leak 1/2 gallon of oil as soon as you gave the first twist so started paying to have it done but $90 was the highest ever paid. (yes, I did get the diesel specific oil)
