One thing a TPMS won't show you

While preparing for a trip and giving the rig a once over, I found this.

Although I have an TPMS for both temp and pressure, it is a habit of mine to run my hands along the sidewall between the DRW to feel the areas I can't see. In this case, looks like I saved myself some roadside grief although it currently isn't leaking. Word to the wise, don't put too much faith in technology as good old hands on is still a good thing to do. Now to put in some OT to cover the new tire needed to replace this one.

TPMS has possibly saved me a rim on my wife's Charger as it alerted her to a low tire. I am working out of town weeks at a time so that was a help.
Otherwise they have been a pain in the !$&? For me. They are good at providing extra light in the instrument cluster with the stupid yellow tire light on more than off. They re good for paying $100 to a dealer to have the thresholds lowered to turn off said stupid yellow light.
They are good for costing more for tire changes.
Well maybe they're good for a lot of things.
I would gladly pay LESS for a truck WITHOUT TPMS, DPF, DEF, NOX, ABS, electronic shift 4wd, stability control, trailer sway control, I'm sure there's more......
I do like EFI especially EFI Live, haha!

The only way I see that happening is if the nail was in something, piece of wood, when it got ran over. Tire threw the piece of wood?

I'd thought along those lines as well, but the mgr at the tire shop today said he's seen that before. His guess is that the front tire picked it up and it landed just right. Only regret is that I didn't buy new batteries in advance for my TPMS system. As luck would have it, on the way home the LR inside dual sensor started whining for a replacement battery. Murphy was watching and waited until the wheels were put back on the truck before letting me know the battery was low. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here is one that was caught by my TPMS. It is a 3/8 by 2 inch bolt that was picked up on the highway.

My TPMS was showing one of my trailer tires down a couple psi from the others. I pulled over at the next truck stop and noticed it was down a little more. (I routinely check tire pressures as I drive. Helps reduce the monotony of driving).

Looking at the tire I found the bolt. The pressure was still above the alarm point. I had to go around some garbage on the road about 100 miles before this. It appeared to be a battery carrier. This 3/8 x 2 inch bolt must have been on the road in the left lane where I went to miss the rest of the garbage.

This is a case where pressure checks and walk around would not have saved me from a tire failure.

The TPMS saved me problems and gave me time to find a level shady place to put my spare on. (Southern Arizona in 95 degree weather with full sun)

And it is possible a TPMS would have alarmed for the OP before the tire failed from the nail.
