Need Help or INF. I bought Used 2008 Ram 2500 turbo Diesel 6.7 Big Horn, Very low Mi. Runs And Looks great, But the first time I had to change the oil,12 Qts, w/new filter, On checking the level to make sure it was up, it was just as black as what I drained out, Is that normal or has anybody had the same thing happen,. Thanks for any thoughts, Ed

I never did in my 01 5.9 either. It took a bit longer than my 6.7 but still got black pretty quick.

Very normal. I usually let my engines drain overnight when doing oil changes. Even then the 6.7 leaves at least 1/3 quart in the pan. So when adding new oil add about 11 2/3 quarts end you will be on the full mark. Mine was always black as soon as I started the engine. Now the 15 is a completely different animal. They oil is still not black at 2,500 miles.

Mine goes from clear to black in about 100 or so miles. Did that since new. No worries from me.

Its good oil if it turns black fast as its actually carrying the crud to get filtered which a good oil will do.

I have a 2012 6.7 HO Cummins. It only happened to me once. On my fourth oil change @ 17500 miles, I checked it when I got home, a whopping 6 miles away. It was every bit as black as when I took it to the dealer to have it changed. I thought the dealer changed the filter and topped it off with fresh oil, and still do. Everyone here thought I was a total moron. Before that change it never happened before and it hasn't happened since. Last oil change, 76400 miles. It has consistently stayed somewhat clear for about 40 miles after the change. I don't think it's normal, but hasn't seemed to have hurt anything either. About 30000 miles ago it got a clean bill of health from Blackstone Lab and runs fine.

Normal within a day or two. I use either Mobile 1 Turbo Diesel synthetic 5W-40 or Rotella T6 synthetic 5W-40.

There is another solution. For keeping the oil cleaner, longer.

Mind you, it IS gonna turn black eventually. No way around this.

But I always have a cheap bottle of CJ-4 compliant oil sitting around.

After opening the drain plug and letting all the old oil out, I always dump through one quart of this extra oil just to help clean out the black crud that seems to want to stay in the oil pan.

I can see the color change from black to the fresher color as this last, clean quart of oil, drains out.

Yeah, I know, wasting the money for that one quart. But, my oil does stay cleaner, clearer, longer.

Yes, agree with above post. Also of note, my 2002 Cummins 5.9L would keep oil clean for a long time too. It's all related to emissions garbage.

Well I don't know fellas. I own a 2001 Ford F250 Power Stroke 7.3 I change the oil every 2500 miles. Once changed I can read through it for over 1000 miles. After reading all these posts about black oil I had to go out and check mine just had it changed 600 miles ago still looks like it just came out of the bottle. Clear and clean. OK little smokey but still very clean. So how long are you guys going before you change your oil? Oh one more thing--- It never even leaves the garage less it has some sort of trailer attached to it so it's a work horse for sure

Two entirely different beasts, 7.3 Power Stroke and the CTD, Cummins uses multi injection events, pre, main and third. Third injection is just after main combustion injection, small amount of fuel is injected to aid in reducing exhaust emissions, the result is some of the soot from the last injection event ends up in the oil making it black. Will have no lasting effect on the engine as long as oil changes are done at correct intervals, as you would do for any engine, to make em last.

Normal, and brand of oil makes zero difference. They all get ink black 10 seconds after you start the engine after a change.
