Nebraska Route 92 and 2 - anyplace to camp?

Already looking forward to next summer. I plan to go to Des Moines in July, and from there I'm thinking of crossing Nebraska on the way to the northwest. (I do about 300 miles per day towing fifth wheel.)

There is always I-80, but I was looking at roads less traveled -- Routes 92 and 2 westbound. I don't see much in the way of camping -- not even a Walmart. (I do see Sherman Reservoir as a possiblility for first stop.) Suggestions will be welcomed.

Agree on Highway 20 and the city campground at Hay Springs. I think it was $10 for full hookup on a pull thru lot for my 40' DP +toad. Nice place to pull in early, cook a nice meal, rest up and head on. Fort Robinson and several other attractions up the road- can head on north to Black Hills.

Agree that most of the small towns out there have free or very modest costing overnight stops with water and Electric. Spalding and Albion, Ne both have city sites next to fairgrounds also.

Merrit Reservor area mentioned above is big for astronomy type people, no lights nearby = huge skies.

Just a suggestion if you need a N/S route mid state, Highway 81 is a very nice N/S highway in Nebraska, some 4 lane and mostly smooth.

Agree with previous suggestion, keep your fuel on the top side of half once you get west of highway 81.

Roadside Inn & RV spaces, Thedford, NE. after a real fast look on MS Streets & Trips. Hmmmm...the name might say something about the place but, oh well, for 1 night almost anything is tolerable. Check RV Park Reviews.

The route looks like an interesting one. We did I80 EB this year but we were coming out of N Denver.

Checkout the listings on Free Campgrounds, Free Campsites, US Public Campgrounds and the Ultimate Public Campgrounds Project. I think you will find a number of potential stops along NE-92, NE-2 and US-20.

US-30 and US-34 are also potential non-interstate routes through Nebraska.

When you get to the west end of 2 be sure to stay at Fort Robinson State park.
Broken Bow Ne has a city campground that we saw on the last trip. The sandhills on highway 2 is much better drive than the interstate.

+1 on this. Or you could take I-680 in Iowa to I-29 north, to US 30 to Blair NE then take NE 91 west to US 275 north, which would take you to US 20 across the remainder of Nebraska.

If you check rvparkreviews.com there are places to stay in that area of Nebraska. If you wanted to stop in Ainsworth, NE that would be about 350 miles from Des Moines, and there's a nice city park there with electric hookup. Or you could stop in Norfolk, NE (city park there) and then go from there to Chadron, NE where's there's the Nebraska National Forest and Chadron State Park plus other camping options in the Chadron area.

Gets you off the interstate into some areas of Nebraska that are different than what you see on I-80.

Nice City RV park along the Missouri River in South Sioux City.
Atkinson Lake State Recreation Area 14 miles west of Oneal, Several around Valentine, Eagles Rest RV Park in Chadron. Most of the small towns have city parks with water and electric hook ups along the route. There are numerous reservoirs and state parks also. Best is to hit the Welcome Center in Sioux City ( great Lewis and Clark museum near the RV park) and look at the campgrounds along the US 20.

There is a Camping ground between Halsey and Thedford. It is the NE National Forest.

check out hwy 20 across the northern part of NE. Beautiful drive and there are state parks, walmarts and other campgrounds along that route. Catch out of Sioux City and follow. A very scenic drive that we have down about half of.

Check the city parks. A lot of small town parks have hookups. Google free campgrounds and see what comes up.

We traveled on US 2 out of Grand Island and went north on County road 97 out of Mullen. Stayed overnight at Merritt Resevoir. Very desolate road through the beautiful Sand Hills of Nebraska. Be sure to fill up every chance.

Alot closer then 300 miles - Winterset, Ia. 30-45 min south of DM. City park is nice. State park - Pammel SP - (outside of town a bit) also nice. Winterset is right on 92.

Don't know what kind of camping you desire. I'd try google maps satellite or stree view.
