Asheville in October?

I'm going to rent an TT from Fort Bragg and head for the mountains in October to see the leaves. Can anyone recommend a park to try? Or perhaps one to avoid? Thanks!

I was just told about this campground this week. It is just outside of Asheville near the outlet mall exit on I-26.

If you can get into Campfire Lodgings, it is truly worth your drive. Small, pleasant with beyond awesome views!! Dog friendly with some walking trails.

Slightly N of Asheville downtown but easy to get there.

Also, Four Paws in Rutherfordton is a good suggestion!

We have taken a liking to Davidson River CG in Pisgah Nat Forest just N of Brevard. They have a couple of power loops & it is a very pretty CG. Staying there 1st weekend Oct for Quilt Show near Ashville airport.

We checked it out when we were this spring - I would not camp there - interesting that all KOA have there guest rating on their website - this one does not

We really liked Bear Creek nobody has mentioned it yet

We were at Asheville East just a month of so back, and would be hard-pressed to ever go back. I made our reservation on line, and ended up in a back-in site in section B that was littered with cigarette butts and so narrow that our awning on one side was within 3 feet of our neighbor's rig, while the the slide on the other side was almost up to that neighbor's table. If you have to stay there, I also strongly recommend that you call for your reservation and get a guarantee from them that you'll get a pull through. If they tell you that all they have are sites B-1 thru B-11, go elsewhere!

We drove through a couple NP campgrounds up on the Blue Ridge Parkway and we could not have fit in most sites. Our TT is about 32' overall. We stayed at Roan Mountain SP in TN on our way to Damascus, VA to bike on the Virginia Creeper Trail. That is a very nice State Park!

We were at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area a couple of years ago and really liked it. Not sure about the full hooks, we only need elect. But really nice especially if you have a Geezer card (America the Beautiful Pass).

You may also want to try the higher elevations near Boone / Blowing Rock. the high Country has great Fall colors. You could try Flintlock CG, or Raccoone Holler, or GrandFather Mountain CG.
Also try Toe River CG, And if you want to dry camp. check out Linville Falls CG, or Julian Price. Both on the Blue Ridge Parkway. And If you go out on Price Lake. It is like being in a bowl surrounded by color

Check Four Paws Kingdom in Rutherfordton. It is only 19 miles from Chimney Rock and a quick scenic drive to Asheville.

If you are flexible with days check the CGs recommended Sunday-Thursday. Most people seem limited to weekends. We have been in the area through October before & never had a problem without reservations weekdays. It helps also if you are not fussy about hookups. W/E sites are always easier to get than FHUs. Dry easier still.

Without reservations it is always best to arrive by mid afternoon beating the crowd who are trying to do a 2 week trip in 1 or maybe getting a spot that somebody did a late cancelation on.

Try Winngrey near Maggie Valley. I doubt they fill-up. I've stayed there a few times, and they are convenient to Cattaloochie Valley in GSMNP, where the elk are, but they are probably out of the rut by October. It's also very convenient to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
