AZ allergies

Spent Jan and Feb in Tucson and Mesa, first time going to AZ in the winter. Late Jan or early Feb my allergies went bonkers. Stayed that way till just the last week or so after being home in MA for a month. Seems odd being so early, although things were starting to bloom while we were in the Mesa area. Does anyone else run into such?

I've got plans to go again Jan - April next winter.

Costco version of Allegra called Aller-Fex. We take it all the time down here.

I have been only mildly bothered with allergies over the years I have lived in Arizona. This year was....the worst. It has gone on for months. I will be glad when a few 100 degree days arrive and put an end to it.

When we move to So. AZ 15 years ago the Allergy Scale went to 10. 3 years later we max'd out the scale and they added two digits to the scale making the top 12. Now we are bumping the 12. SO I started allergy shots this year as meds were not holding last year. Results after 8 months of shots are this is the best season I have had in 5 year in AZ. The shots are working for ME.

Everyone is different. We spend every winter in Arizona and this one has been the best for our allergies even though things have been blooming early and we've had rains to green up grasses.

Keep in mind that people are allergic to different things. No one is the same.

We love Colorado but the pine pollen really affects our allergies. Still... we go to places like that and just deal with it because that's where we want to be.

I lived in Tucson for several years back in the 70s. The Russian Olive trees were my nemesis. They had me so stopped up and miserable I finally left for Colorado.

I have rarely had problems with seasonal allergies living just south of Tucson but this year was brutal. It's OK now--

AZ Allergist calls it a 'crazy' allergy season

"Our allergy season usually starts in mid-February. But even the beginning of January we were already starting to see symptoms, it was unbelievable," said Dr. Duane Wong with Arizona Allergy Associates.

It's OK to blame the weather. A mild winter with the lack of freezing temperatures is the reason more Kleenex is selling this season

"Once it gets hot a few days in a row, then the pollen counts drop down. And even though it's hot, most people start to feel a lot better then," Wong said.


So stay inside during the peak hours, specifically, 5 p.m. through 10 a.m. the following morning is when pollen counts are highest.

Thanks all, good to know it's not just me that's allergic to AZ. Will try it again next year but if it's like this year that'll be the end of it.

I'll have to add a humidifier to the gear.

A humidifier will help your RV, your skin, eyes and nasal passages. When they get so extremely dry they are more susceptible to irritation from allergies, viruses or bacteria.

Many people in the Southwest are having allergy problems this year including me.

Yes this past winter was a bad one for allergies. We were only there a few weeks when we went out for a ride in our Tracker along dusty roads etc. The next morning my DH's hands were so swollen that we had to go to the clinic. This is the second year that we have had to seek medical attention for skin infections caused by allergies. I too was constantly taking allergy meds as well as slathering on lotions to prevent my skin from itching. For the better part of our stay he took allergy pills and put on very expensive cream and was extremely careful around dust and going out when it was windy. Has cleared up nicely once we were back home.

Someone suggested because of the wetter/windier conditions perhaps the top layer
of sand/earth has eroded and was adding more allergens to the air. Of course it didn't help that our park did nothing to treat weeds that were in other years taken care of quickly.
