Take a look at Yellow Jacket campground. There is actaully a lot to do in this area, there are two state parks and numerous little shops to go in. As said before, developers haven't really touched it yet. This weekend is the Watermelon Festival in Chiefland, it's just a good small town festival. If you like to bike or walk, the Nature Coast trail runs from Chiefland to Cross City and Trenton. Gainesville is only about a 45 minute drive from here with Ocala about an hour. Certain parts of Old Town are rough, mainly first district. I would stay far away from Southern Comfort Campground in Dixie. Feel free to PM me, I live in Chiefland.

We go to Florida frequently on spring/fall breaks with our grandson. We've stayed everywhere from Naples up to Pensacola on the gulf side and from Miami to Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic side. They're all great, each with its own strong points. It depends on what you want to do with your time. Grandson and I golf, bike, hike the beaches. DW and grandson swim, hunt seashells, etc. We do museums and any historical, cultural interests in the area. There's plenty to do where ever you go. If you like to fish or play golf, :B you've got it made.

I'd look at Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park in Crystal River FL. That's to the south of Steinhatchee. I've never stayed there but I see people here recommending it all the time. There's a lot more to do and see around Crystal River too.

Spoke to a lot of folks and Old Town seems to be a lot of low income and not safe. Police in the area a lot talk with them also.
We want something where we can relax and not worry.
Thank for all the help.
Steinhatchee: I also found out that there are a lot of Michigan people there.

Nature's Coast RV is very small and just like a parking lot as it's about a foot or two from your awning to the next trailer when we looked at it. One row of RV's packed in side by side unless they have built more sites in the past 2 years. The park was fairly clean and only approx a mile and a half to the bridge to the small town but not mch there. Gulf or beach access is really non-existent but if you have a small boat, you can fish or find several small type sand beach spots but they are usually very buggy etc. There is tiny Dekle Beach on the end of SR 361 on the Gulf miles north of Steinhatchee but it's mostly private and posted. Some people like being in a sardine can an like it but we sure couldn't take it.

Our CG site where we stay is not the norm either and why we like it as we have 100' beyond our awning of grass and some shade trees the woods and nearly 300' of width with no other RV sites and 1-1/2 miles from a good grocery store, fuel station, hardware, restaurants, Dollar General and many other stores/bussinesses and yet we are in the country. 2-4 miles fron a laundramat and a large swimming clean water spring park or a very large flowing river and lots of other stores/good eating places etc. The locals are very friendly and act as if they really want you there. Not many of these nice combo's in Florida without being in a concrete jungle and what comes with it!

Steinhatchee had one brief shining moment as the drug trafficking capitol of the Gulf coast. The bales were floating around like gulls. Lots of big fancy houses were built then were ReCo'ed by the government and sat empty for years. It has now reverted back to a sleepy fishing village. Personally I would prefer to be either further north. Two months in Steinhatchee might get a little old. lizzie

You would do better to move around some rather than spend two months in that one area to see all of what us old time natives call "Old Florida".

We spend a couple months a year in the Old Town/Fanning Springs area. Lots of good CG's and lots to do all around the area and very laid back. That's why we go there! All the way from Steinhatchee to Cedar Key including Horseshoe Beach, Suwanuee, Old Town, Fanning Springs, and Chiefland etc. A good Walmart, Winn Dixie, Walgreens, CVS, Hardware stores, restaurants, pizza places, fast food places, huge laundramat, RV supply place, vehicle dealerships, flee markets, Tracror Supply store, small medical center, and everything you'd need right in Chiefland. Very clean and safe area and the people are ultra friendly.

A very nice quiet white sand large (about a mile long) swimming beach and hiking area on the Gulf, with a small CG and a boat launch between Horseshoe Beach and Suwanuee named Shired Island. Has a fishing dock at the beach also. A well signed good smooth blacktop road going south off the road from Cross City the Horseshoe Beach. Road ends at the beach.

Lots of natural clear water springs all around the area for swimming also.

It's the real Florida and has not been ruined by developers. We used to have a place on South Florida for 19 years but can't stand it down there anymore as it's a zoo and concrete jungle now with rampid crime, traffic jams galore, postage stamp sized sites, no privacy, and overinflated prices for anything and everything. No fun anymore!

Try coastal Hwy 98 from St. Marks Lighthouse, south of Tallahassee, west to Mexico Bch. Lots of forest, sleepy fishing villages, miles of white sandy beaches where you can stop, take a walk, do a little fishing or take a dip. There's a small working waterfront, so the dives are well stocked with fresh seafood. Along with the residents, you too, can stock your freezer from the fish houses. Several SPs and a city park along that stretch. Ho Hum RV park is popular with the snowbirds. Old Florida along the seashore as it was 50-60 years ago. Enjoy.

20 miles from US19, and 35 miles to the nearest town. Very quiet. If you like fishing, kayaking and seclusion, it's the place. If you like stuff to do, go in the panhandle or farther south to where there are beaches.
If you don't care about salt water or beaches, we like Yellow Jacket RV park near Old Town. On the Suwannee River. Old Florida charm. About 9 miles from US19. www.yellowjacketrvresort.com

We are down in Fort Myers Beach. Lots of great RV parks, some right on the gulf of Mexico. We moved here full time 2 years ago and love the location. Easy to RV down into the Keys or across to the Atlantic. During the season it does get very busy around the beach area but there is so much more than just the beach here to enjoy.

Steinhatchee is a small town on the Gulf coast and on the Steinhatchee River. There are no real beaches nearby. But if you like boating and fishing on the Gulf then you'll find plenty to do. Off hand I'd say there is not much else to do in the area. No hiking, springs or parks for example.

It is also well away from any bigger towns, the nearest would probably be Perry which would be an hour or so away. I don't recall seeing any major supermarkets or theaters there in Steinhatchee.

My wife had some relatives who lived there and we live about an hour away.
