Towing on 2010 ram 6.7 diesel

Hello all,

Debating on getting a ram 2010 6.7 2500, Crew, 3.42 RFE. One model here has 130k miles.
Planning on using it for 5th wheel RV towing.
RV is about ~10k.
According to rambodybuilder, payload is 2400 and towing capacity is under 10k (which are pathetic btw)

Considering getting a gasser (6.2 ford or similar) for considerably less money (20k vs 28k $CDN). It just seems hard to justify the cost difference. My thought is that the 6.7 may give me some room to grow if I upgrade my trailer in the future.

Questions:

Whats the reliability like on 2010 6.7?
How far can I push this truck, can I go to a 20k trailer safely? Enough power? (even though its rated under 10k)
Even though payload is 2400, can I put 3k pin weight plus cargo safely? (w/ tire ugrades + airbags)

Thanks for all the responses everyone. It seems like most people believe the truck will certainly pull the weight, and the opinion on whether or not it is safe is quite mixed. However, most people claiming it is safe are the people who actually exceed GVWRs and vice versa.

I do believe I would most likely be fine pulling a large trailer with the 2500, but I'm almost certain that pulling within the ratings will result in better performance and possibly some reduced liability. I have noticed that 2011+ superduty's have quite high ratings.

I think I will save my money for now and try out the gasser, which I hear will give me less problems than diesel, then reevaluate if I choose to trade in my trailer in the future. Just makes more sense to buy a truck with proper ratings if I am going to invest an additional 40% on that truck. If it was the same price, I wouldn't have to think twice.

From somoene who hauls 30k pounds daily...dont give thjs another thought.

If you are comfortable with possibility of an overweight ticket or if your insurance provider wont cover you if you have an accident.

I have coverage for the extra weight, scales ignore my door sticker and only care that im not over capacity for the trailer.

camp-n-family, At 20K lbs. of 5th wheel, He "WILL" likely exceed the stock tire rating but not the axle (same rear diff. on 2500 and 3500). He also stated... upgrading tires, rims, adding air bags!

He didn't ask if you could stay within the little sticker ratings. He asked if it could be done safely. I'd do it with my 2005 2500 and do it safely.

A 20k fiver would have 4k+ pin weight at the low end average of 20 percent trailer weight. Add in a couple hundred pounds for the hitch and a few more for some passengers and you will FAR exceed the tire and axle ratings of a 2500 truck. That is not safe. A 20k fiver is at the high end of a 3500 dually ratings.

There was ZERO difference between my 2011 HO RAM Dually with 3.42's and 4.10's other than gearing. As far as safety was concerned there was ZERO difference. I towed 28-29K with no problem for 65K with 3.42's. The rear end and trans looked great at that mileage with over 1/2 of those miles towing.

You will be much much happier with the Dodge. Heck back in the 90s we all towed over 10k lbs with much worse frames, trannies, suspensions, and they towed fine. I had an 07.5 Dodge with Cummins and now a 2011 and they both have been amazing.

My '14 Ram 2500 is rated at 10,000lbs GVWR. That is simply because 10K is the max weight limit for a 3/4 ton/2500 badge per government standards. If you look at the axle ratings it has a FAWR of 6,000 and a RAWR of 6.500....grand total 12,500 lbs. Doesn't quite add up now :h

Published base weight is 7,958 with with 4,979 on the front and 2,980 on the rear. So, that leaves me a shade over 1,000 lbs on the front axle and 3,500 lbs on the rear......according to axle ratings.

I'm happy with the power and the braking capacity especially with the OEM exhaust brake. I put on a set of Timbrens just to keep things level. We towed 4,100 miles through the Rockies a few weeks ago and at no point felt over loaded, top heavy, or outmatched by the trailer.

I'm towing much heavier with my '07 3500 SRW at over 100K miles. With any SRW Ram (2500/3500) you'll want to and air bags for level ride, for any significant tongue weight. They are pretty soft in the rear suspension. They rear differentials are same on later model 2500/3500 series. Love my Dodge Ram!

Tow rating for a 2010 Ram 2500 CTD 3.42 CC LB is only 9600 lbs. Cooling is the issue. Jump to 3.73 and you get 12,500+/- depending on trims.
