Garage Door Height ?

I'm cutting my barn for a new garage door. I'd like to make the door 12' 3" tall 12' wide. The reason is that I have two 7x9 doors (one each side) of the new door I'm ordering and I'd like the panels to match up with the ones on each side. The 7x9's have four 21" panels to get them at 7 foot. If I use 7 panels that are 21 inches it would look better.

My current RV is 11' 10" so I'll fit. I tested it by going under a friends 12' door and it clears.

My question is: Is 12' 3" big enough to get about any RV under? Someday I may get a new one but I'll never be able to get one longer than a 33 footer. I just don't want to regret doing a 12' 3" someday.

PS: I have 14' 6" inside height to the bottom of the trusses.

Thanks everyone. Ordered a 13 high 12 foot wide door. If anyone ever wanted to get a bigger motorhome up my driveway, they'd by crazier than I am. It's everything I can do to get the 31 footer up here now and I only have 14' 6" inside with a max length of 41' wall to wall. I don't see us ever needing more than 13. If we do trade it will be smaller or the same size RV. I'm up a mountain! When you get up to the top it's always a "We made it!" moment.

Just remember the Murphy Standard.. All doors will be six inches too short.

Seriously there are some heavy duty GDO's for home use.. and actually it is not as big a deal as you might think... The Door has springs or other means of being counter weighted.. The opener only needs a little power to open it, Bigger, opens faster.

Oh, and though I do not know the federal regulations.. I suspect the difference between the commercial opener and the residential is the emergency override device.

Another vote for 14'. Moving a motor home (mine anyway) is not a good idea with bags deflated.

Just a question is there any reason why you cannot use a commercial operator if it's attached ???

The commercial operator is going to be more heavy duty

Yes, there is a issue, it is a Federal Law. Any GDO on a Residence MUST carry a UL325 Residential GDO Certification. No commercial operator does. Believe me, I wish one was available. It would greatly simplify my life.

Better to plan for the biggest (tallest) RV you may get. My garage has a 12' wide by 14' tall door with a 16' clear height inside. Better to be too big than to have to modify it later.

There is a possibility that the OP could use a horizontal rolling door or maybe a hinged door.

I could use a horizontal door but I like the way a regular door seals.

Taller is always better. I was wondering about the limited height, luckily we have some pros here to address that.

Our doors are 12 wide, 14 high, they work well.
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

I also agree that you should not go any smaller than 14 x 14. That is what I have and any smaller would not make sense.

14 X 14 is what I did and I will do it the same next time I build.

I'm 13'1" on my fifth wheel. My door is 14' (commercial door). no regrets.

You will be limited by your truss height of 14' 6". Looks like Jim Norman has some good suggestions.

Definitely go as high as you can.
