Slow Windows PC ------ Why?

My windows pc is unusually slow for the past week or so. I disabled my cccleaner and malwarebytes, but seemed to have no effect. I'm due to get the Windows 10 free upgrade but haven't yet; could that have something to do with it?

I keep hoping some company will come up with a simple viable alternative to windows/apple, but guess that isn't possible with all the hacking etc.

Copy and Pasted from the article.
The reservation screen asks for your email address so you can receive the notification. Enter your email address and click the Send confirmation button. You can now close the Get Windows 10 window.
Now after all of this I don't know what I thought I knew. Lol! However, all is good in my hood with these crazy computers, tablets, ipads, and laptops.

This is how my notification worked with win10... do you still think I got scammed? If you read down towards the middle then it explains about email notification along with icon.
From cnet...

If you read the article you will get a notification when you reserve your copy of windows 10. I read nothing that says you will get an email when its ready to install it. That is how it has worked for me. I reserved a copy, got an email that said my copy is reserved, then when its ready the little windows icon on the bottom tells me its there and if I would like to install it. I never received an email from 6 machines that it was ready and to click on something. So yah I do believe you were scammed

I personally wouldn't upgrade a computer that is having problems, most likely those problems won't be fixed by the upgrade and you will not be happy with the upgrade and will blame MS or the new OS.

I agree that you should do a scan for Malware to see if that shows up anything.

You don't have to wait for Microsoft to send you the notification to install WIN 10, you can go directly to the Microsoft store and download it from there. I upgraded a PC and a laptop a few days after the official release and I have been pleased with 10 so far.

Is the computer itself running slow, such as booting slow, opening programs, etc? Or is just your internet acting slow?

I just observed a very strange phenomena over a three week period at a campground. Their wi-fi was decent but as normal would drag to a halt on weekends and even during the week many times. When that occurred my cell phone hot spot would also drag to a halt. Call me crazy but I suspect the massive amount of Windows 10 downloads in that area was dragging the throughput down.

I believe Windows 10 can make use of your computers to share the downloads not only within your network but throughtout the internet if you allow it.

The internet speed at that location was not great even when running ok. The uplink speed was sub turtle. IF tens of thousands of computers were trying to share by uploading info it could grind things to a halt.

We are a couple of hundred miles from that location now. Internet speeds are just ok here. Both on the camp wi fi and the hot spots.

FWIW, your mileage may vary.

First thing to do is reboot it and check it after that. It sometimes happens to me as well and there might be some updates, or its waiting to restart to apply the updates.

The Win10 download does not take weeks to download lol.

lap527, sorry you were scammed. As others mentioned you will get the notification from that windows icon.

lap527 it would be interesting to hear how you got the Win10 notification. The only notification that is legit will come from the Windows icon on the lower right side of your task bar. There are a lot of scams out there doing exactly what you described.

I got a notification for Win10 and then had to okay the download. After installing Win10 I wasn't paying attention, thought I was updating media player, clicked, and got a nasty virus. AVG and Anti-Malwarebytes wouldn't touch it. Finally downloaded Bitdefender free and now all is well. Just a thought, you may have picked up something due to machine being so slow.

Windows isn't the problem.

I've done the upgrade on a laptop from 8.1 and our desktop from Windows 7.

From 7 you have to make sure you have the latest drivers but from from 8.1 it was seamless.

Maybe you need a geek which I am not to help you out.

Good luck as Windows 10 is a good upgrade...IMHO of course.

If you signed up for Win 10 it could be down loading in the back ground.
Have you ran a malware program such as the free Malwarebytes. You could have a bug.
Win 10 has improved by older PCs and my notebook that could not run Win 7 very well. Graphics are much improved.
