I'm a Californian, and I'm furious about this new tax. Yes, all the extra has been swiped for the Bullet train, which is sooo stoopid. SW air just announced a whole bunch of new routes outa Sacramento and with fares so cheap, why would anyone want to take a fast train? And yes the Lottery - they also swiped that money from the schools. Our Moombean Gov is very good at "reallocating"....

Good morning Murphysranch. I can't comment much on the politics of the state as we are not residents although we do own property there and pay taxes. However, re preferences between plane and fast train. I think you would find that the majority of folks who have travelled fast trains would pick fast trains over planes pretty much always. It is just a much nicer experience in terms of comfort, stress, convenience etcetera. Especially on something like a run from SanFrancisco to LA. Of course this is just my humble opinion.

There are lots of things to care about when you're old and have limited time left here.

Whether CA raises gas taxes is not on my top 10. Obviously it's on yours. Now go do something about it.

I think ya'll need to stop whining about your gas prices is what I think... ๐Ÿ˜ž Our gas (metro Vancouver, BC area) is currently at approx. $3.75 USD per gal. - 2nd highest in Canada. Makes California look like a bargain to us.

Our local gas taxes total approx. $1.22 USD per gallon ($0.42 Can per liter). Since we are in a rural area, we don't even get the benefits of what the taxes go towards. Our local tax breakdown:

Well what do you expect, THAT IS HOW YOUR "FREE HEALTHCARE" IS PAID FOR!

Yeah, EVERYTHING IS MORE EXPENSIVE IN CANADA, we get that, that is what you get when everything is taxed to pay for all of the "free" stuff handed out like candy to all the non working along with those who do work.

There is no such thing as a "FREE" meal, someone must carry the burden (IE TAXES) to pay for those who don't work or don't want to be burdened to work.

We'll first of all, that is a regional price and most of Canada has lower gas prices. We are 400 KM from Vancouver here and gas and diesel are about 2.89 US per US gallon.

Second of all, the only people who call Canada's health care system free are Americans. Canadians are well aware that our health care is not free. The vast majority are just happy we have one. Yes it is a cultural difference. Our culture believes that health care is a right. Other cultures consider it a privilege. Neither is right or wrong but consider being respectful when speaking to neighbours and other cultures and not talking down to them. That is just bad manners.

The money will not go to the roads, they have done this 3 other times and the roads are still ****. The Governor has the power to declare any program in financial need and can take the funds from any program. California is always broke but finds funds to help illegals.

Lol...I was wondering when someone would go there because I was thinking while reading all the posts about the same thing. Since they might be loosing govt funding because of having sanctuary cities they are possibly using the tax as a supplement for the loss of govt funds. I know if I ever go there with my RV I will have an extra fuel tank in my truck in order to not buy any more fuel there than necessary.

Only blue people in blue states believe this. The money goes into the general fund. Monies from the general fund goes to whoever will get a state rep re-elected.

Also known as a "slush fund".

Really, it doesn't matter to California whether you're more than willing or not. If you want gas/diesel you'll pay it. Like it or lump it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Or buy it over the Nevada/Arizona border. I can do over 700 miles without a fuel stop.

A story about corruption (whish it would happen here) I was in China in 2003 on a tour. The highway was 3 years old but felt like a roller coaster. Our tour guide explained that the head of transportation oke'd the lowest bid and got caught taking millions in bribes. Off to jail he goes and vanished 6 months later. 1 year after that it was determined that his family was living from the bribe money and yes they vanished.

The Amtrak NE corridor's revenue and usage, surpasses and supports the ENTIRETY of the system. The portion of the ride going from Boston to DC pretty much requires advance reservation for NE Regional and Acela due to popularity which in part is due to it's speed. It could go even faster if new track was laid in parts of the run and gosh the way I hear most RV.net posters comment faster is generally better:B.

How this country got so far behind the rest of the world in developing and maintaining a long distance rail system is a bit perplexing and anti progressive to me yet we are certainly a good half a century behind from what I can see.

Fair enough... but you quoted MY text and gave a response pretty unrelated to my argument.

And by the way, Amtrak received #1.3 BILLION in federal grants last year alone. https://www.fra.dot.gov/Page/P0249 Thats a far cry from your statement that the NE Corridor revenue is sufficient to pay for costs of the entire system.

The United States isn't like the European countries that you reference. The mode of transport in the US is far different than those countries. There are plenty of things that are different between the two and plenty of reasons as to why we don't a high speed rail system. We don't need it and the majority of the country doesn't want it (at least they aren't willing to pay the cost that it would take to get it). We aren't a Socialist country (yet). You want to get from NY to LA, you gotta do it yourself, its not going to be subsidized by MY tax dollars.

Sure getting off track. What part of fuel taxes being used to provide services for those that want something for nothing don't we understand? Buying votes with fuel tax and not using that money for the exusive benefit of the provider is theft. If you want to provide transportation for others, rich or poor, by all means send your check.

Of course the reverse can be said of car-less citizens who pay for roads they have no direct use for. In some parts of the country mass transit is the norm and car ownership unusual.

The difference is that those roads are used to transport freight, police and fire fighters... services that the car-less citizens still use. Those are essential services that benefit everyone in society and are part of the core goals of the federal government.

High speed transit that costs an exorbitant amount of money and benefits very few people is not a core goal of government...

And that shows the dichotomy between a blue state liberal living in a city and the rest of us that reside in the real world.

Not sure what you think that adds to the conversation besides your apparent disdain for people with different ideas than your own but truly some people think it's all about them and their ways.

So be it....but just as a heads up- there's a heck of a lot more people living in urban areas than not. By your way of thinking guess the majority rules and we should take your pig farm subsidy away from you just cause we don't understand the value of swine.

I worked in NYC for 3 years - saw many a swine there too.

Yeehup. We got all kinds of beasties up here as well. Personally, I find certain types of "sooey" just begging to be slaughtered, fried and laid to the side w/ a nice squirt of Frank's; tasty.
