COLD! Don't Laugh

Okay so all the people up North can laugh if you want to but we woke up in the camper this morning and it was down in the 40s!!! I know for some people that's not that cold but we live in South Florida below the line of tropics! This isn't supposed to happen to us! DW and I huddled under the covers arguing about who was going to get up first. Guess who won that argument? In defense of my cowardice I said, Look at the poor dog! Wife responded, It's a female you moron and she's fine! First time ever we put the heat on. It worked much better than we ever anticipated. Hot as all get go! We opened all the windows and went out to eat. This has all been very traumatic. We might just sell everything and move to a warmer climate. :E

The tropic of Cancer lies south of Florida, just above Cuba. So if you were in Florida, you were not below the line of the tropics. No wonder you were cold.

Exactly.

The Polar ice caps ARE melting. At my current location in Ft Myers, my elevation is +13.38 ft according to my elevation app which isn't too bad for Florida. I've been in places in Florida where the elevation was in the single digits - and I'm not talking coastal.

Weather Patterns are changing but this winter has indeed been strange. I'm in S.E. GA not 50 miles from FL state line (Well about 50) and I've had several nights in the 30's but even then it's not all that cold.

And of course last night the Lights went out in GA (Well at least our part of it) but thankfully I needed neither heat nor cool so I let the batteries handle the DVR's for the overnight TV shows and slept....(Distracted driver, Do not know if Drugs, Booze or Texting, failed to notice road curved just outside RV park (We are talking FEET outside here, not yards) and took out utility pole.. Neighbors tell me it was spactular but I had A/C on Fan mode so I heard nothing save the BEEP BEEP BEEP of the trucks backing up as they fixed it.. 4 1/2 hours w/o power 15 plus w/o internet, telephone or TV save for OTA).
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

You think that's bad, wait till the ocean rises (if the wackos are correct) and in the morning you wake and are floating out to sea.

Was very chilly yesterday at Fanning Springs but that makes it good for bike riding. Is the Suwannee River level back down so the water is clear in the springs yet? Been dark for weeks with the high river back flowing into the springs. Can't see the manatees then or even a foot deep.

We have been to Four Mile State Park a few times and camped with other rv.net forum members and some other friends as we'd all chose to meet up there. 3 from our home area, one from north Texas, and one from West Missouri (Lake of the Ozarks). Then along the Lake Ontario lake shore and thru Rochester and on east to Maine. 2 had never been to Niagara Falls before. Had a retired farmer from near Albion, NY on the site next to us at Old Town 2 years ago that stayed for over 2 months. Had a woman friend from Moscow Russia with him. She was totally enthralled with the USA and said she didn't want to go back to Russia ever! But has to!

The Suwanee River is still high and the springs are somewhat murky. Manatee to some extent and Fanning Springs won't allow swimming because of it.

Western New York can be gorgeous six or seven months of the year. The rest of the year makes you pay for it!

So my good friend is from Erie, PA, known for absurd lake effect snow every winter. He and his wife moved to Maryland and I worked with him for several years before he moved to Tampa. Every February we drive down and visit him. 3 years ago we were down at his house and were leaving after sunset. It was probably 55 degrees or so. He was outside talking to us, then had to go put a JACKET on because it was "freezing" to him.

My wife and I laugh about that to this day!!!

Small world, travelnutz. We were at Fanning Springs both yesterday (to ride bikes) and the day before to visit the State Park.

We live in western NY nestled nicely below Lake Ontario and a little east if Lake Erie. This location is beautiful but the dampness from the lakes does make for bitter cold up home.

The big difference I see, is when the sun comes out it warms up and I have yet to worry about black ice or ANY ice for that matter.

We will most likely start heading home in early April - depending on the weather back home.

cmcdar,

Same temp here across the river from you at Old Town/Fanning Springs, Florida. 32F here in Florida feels a lot colder than 15F back in West Michigan on the Lake Michigan shoreline were we live. It's downright bitter below 40F here in Florida and even bone chilling below 50F, can't wear enough clothes to feel comfortable outside. All winter back at home we only wear a sweatshirt with a simple nylon Spring jacket over it and are very comfortable.

The unlined nylon jacket blocks out any wind/air penetration and the sweatshirt is the insulation up north. Doesn't work here in Florida because of the constant very wet air that gets unbearable when the air temp goes down. Air temps are so deceiving to the feel down here in Florida and when hot here (80's plus) it's plainly muggy and gets unbearable too. Strange to see that nobody goes outside of the homes or RV's when it's below 60F or above 90F. Over 50 years of observing this now!

So unlike up north where people are out in droves all winter even in 10F temps and we don't worry about 90's because it just doesn't happen on the lakeshore area where we live. Will probably head back home in about 2 weeks as there's no snow or ice which is why we even spend 2 to 2-1/2 months down here in winter because my wife is disabled and doesn't want to chance slipping and falling. 19 surgeries so far and lots of metal/screws/and 3 fusions and doesn't want any more! Do what you gotta do!

BTW, was the same temp here and back home in Michigan (40.3F) at midnight last night (Saturday) and already in the 50's at 10 am today (Sunday) back home and no snow on the ground and no ice on the river or Lake Michigan. There are several live cams we access constantly within approx 3 miles of our home on the lakeshore.
