Do we really need skylights in the shower?

Last night I was taking a shower and looked up at the skylight and wondered to myself, do we really need this thing? I mean it's only practical during the daylight hours, it's a big penetration in the roof that's prone to leaks and weakens the roof, and it lets in a huge amount of heat on sunny days.

So my question to you is this. If the manufacturer offered you the choice would you rather:
  1. Take the skylight as standard equipment
  2. Skip the skylight and opt for $150 cash in your pocket
  3. Skip the skylight and take a 150 watt solar panel in that spot for no extra cost.

Frankly I'd accept no skylight for free-or pay to delete. I had an '05 Airstream which needed two new skylights in 8 years due to UV damage-skylights cracked and grossly weakened-two different mfg one billed as durable (both started clear but quickly became opaque due to UV damage). No skylight also gives more room for solar panel and is one less point of no insulation. When I bought this motorhome in 2012 I was happy to see skylights are not included. It did include a light in the shower. I'm 6' without issue-the shower is not elevated off the MH floor.

Allows me to stand tall while showering.

Works for me.

Now ceiling fans .....that's a different story
Ditto. Without the skylight I would have to stoop in the shower.

Our Tiffin has a skylight above the shower which I like but also has a slide panel below the skylight that can be closed. This helps to keep the heat out of the bathroom on hot summer days. Often in the summer I just open the panel part way to have more light but not too much.

I like ours, it gives more head room and in the daylight I do not need to turn a light on.

I agree let's in a lot of heat and cold! I guess if u need a 6'++
space stay home. It is called "Camping"! IMHO!!

Some of us call it "living" rather than "camping", and we also call our RV "home". :R ๐Ÿ™‚

Not quite to that point, but we consider using the 5er living. I enjoy the extra light and headroom. Leaks, well no more than a vent!
We did spend four months living in it this summer, and it was great!

if you are concerned about it leaking I would suggest covering the glass with something and spraying some auto body undercoating over the rubberized seal making the water repel more easily so it will flow away from the skylight.

To combat the heat intrusion from the skylight I placed a yellow window sheer folded about 6 times between the two panels. It cuts down on the heat while allowing some light through.

Now our restroom area has a yellow glow during the day. You can choose your own color scheme.

I usually shower before or after the sun is up and was bummed that the shower had very little light in it unless the sun was out. I had a clear shot to a nearby light (that was too dim) for power. I added that 12v led ribbon light between the opaque panels of the dome to give me good light in the shower at night. Wife loves it.

I probably wouldn't hit my head without it but I like the extra clearance it gives.

At 6'4", without the skylight, my husband would never be able to take a shower standing up.

I guess if you are 5 foot tall and under it wouldn't matter. :B
Am I the only one who showers after sundown? Obviously, the skylight doesn't help one bit for light after sundown. That's why they also installed lighting in my bathroom.
