Garmin Basecamp

I have just bought a Garmin RV 760LMT an having a learning curve for me goes straight up. The tutorial online is not that easy to fallow. I have tried to fallow the youtube videos how to use BaseCamp. All with little luck. I have used Garmin handheld GPS for boats that I have set up trips on with no problem. Is there a place that shows you how to program and set up routes and import POIs?

What a neat route planning tool. Thanks for posting. I'll be using this one for my next trip.

I also hate Basecamp. I use this web site http://gpx.cgtk.co.uk/ to create a route in the Google Maps interface. If I don't like the route created by Google Maps, I will drag the route to my preferred roads.

Name the route and select "Save Route".

Download the route by selecting "Download Garmin GPX file".

Copy the GPX file from my computer to the GPX folder on the Garmin.

If I remember correctly, the new route is found in the Trip Planner on my Garmin 65LM.

You don't have to have the GPS plugged into your PC for Basecamp to work. But you do have to have an up-to-date map loaded on the computer for Basecamp to work.

I use Basecamp all the time to create routes to load on my GPS. But I use Street Atlas to plan my routes and then recreate them in Basecamp to upload to the GPS. The main issue I have with Basecamp is that the smaller roads disappear as you zoom out. That makes overall planning a real pain, and is why I use Street Atlas for initial planning.

Like someone mentioned double check your route after loading it on the GPS. Some of them are notorious for changing the route.

BaseCamp is a useless POS.

I have tried to fallow the once on Youtube. Some are in German or a heave English accent and they talk to fast when to fallow them. On of the things I do not like about BaseCamp is you have to have the GPS plugged into your PC to use the map of where the streets are. I have been flipping from one screen on Youtube then back to BaseCamp. That makes it slow to use. I am learning it slowly by making mistakes and trying to fix them. Now I have to learn how the remove the mistakes I have made.
FYI, the facebook Garmin Plus BaseCamp page is in German. Ich spreche kein Deutsch

Just stick with it and go slow, I found quite a few you tube videos that helped a lot and were easy to follow, if you are trying to fallow them I see where your problem might be.

I found plenty of tutorials on youtube. Maybe you can fallow them.

Like others have said.
It's a slow process but once you master it you will agree that it is a very handy, powerful app.

I would agree with Al. I plan my trip in Basecamp then load the waypoints into my GPS. I make sure the mileage is exactly the same in my GPS as it was in Basecamp. You may have to use many waypoints to insure the GPS follows the best route. The GPS will send you on some crazy routes if you're not careful.
I don't find Basecamp very user friendly but is a great tool once you get familiar with it. I just kept playing with it until I got on to it.
Good luck.

Rather steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, Base Camp is pretty neat. I use it regularly.

As far as the POI files, check out Extra POI Editor. Once you've downloaded the POI file from wherever, it'll do the necessary conversions for Garmin. It's also good at creating your own POI files.

Experiment with the Trip Planner function . . . and know that just because Base Camp plots a route, your GPS may change it for whatever reason. Trick to force the route is to create and use waypoints on the roads that Garmin doesn't choose to use and route to them. Once you program the start and end points of a route, use the slider to find other things along that route - including your waypoints. And you can right-click any point on the map and get a menu that lets you see what's near that point from Garmin's built-in POI files.

I always load a base camp created route into my GPS and then display it to see if it still goes where you want. That's especially important for the RV . . . if a campground publishes driving directions, it's good if the GPS will direct you over that routing, but sometimes you have to force it.

Don't give up - Base Camp is very powerful, just poorly documented. Best of all, it's free.

My sympathies; Basecamp is a pain in the butt.

You can create waypoints, then go file > new > route using selected waypoints (in order of appearance)
