Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

Another member suggested a new forum section with new products but it doesn't look like it will be feasible. So I thought I would post this here under General RVing Issues. If enough people post (even if you have mentioned it before in another post) we can keep it near the top?

Do you have a handy hint, a new product or an old product that makes your RVing or Camping much better?

(Sorry, no commercial advertising allowed)

I'll start:

Someone in the Camping Van posted a reference to using a Super-Chamois to wipe down their shower. I have been using an icky old thick sponge and I like the chamois idea so much more.

Now I want to hear what works for you

When we took my DW's 80 year old mother to Alaska, I wanted to make our metal steps on the 5er safer. Took old pieces of carpet and cut to fit to steps. Than glued velcrow strips to the back of the carpet such that I could easily attach and remove the carpet from the steps. By removing them I could keep them "dry" when it rained a lot.

Yes -- they look great. I saw them @ Home Depot before Xmas and wished I had picked up a few. Here's a link to what they look like. I did not realize they came in the other metal tones...

Thanks Becky, it's good to know you can use regular spray paint and not the more expensive kind!

In regards to painting the white Command hooks; I use regular spray paint on mine. I just spray them the color I need them to be to make them "disappear" into the decor of the room. Has worked well for me. Becky

Would a permanent marker / wide tip Sharpie (if anybody makes the shade you want) work on the white Command hooks? It might be necessary to go over it two or more times, but I've found that black and red wide-tip laundry markers will color most plastics. I've never looked, but I wonder if someone makes something similar in brown?

On a related subject, they now make a silver Sharpie. I've been using one for a few years to record oil change date & miles on the top of the fan shroud.

I use several sets of rechargeable AA batteries, and use a black Sharpie to number the sets so I can tell 'em apart.

For some reason I haven't been able to find the new Command hooks around where I live. Maybe after the holidays are over they will get them in!

Have any of you tried to use the plastic paint on the white command hooks? The white just stand out like a sore thumb and I use them all over the TT. I think the brown paint, just on the front of the hook, would work and they wouldn't stick out so much!

Have a wonderful time campernuts! I am sure you will have lots of ideas to add after your first trip, you will find things along the way that would make you wonder how to resolve it. That's what's so great about this topic. Enjoy! Rv-Bella

Thanks to all of you that have posted your ideas to this thread. Thanks to you, my wife and I are going to have a much better first trip in our mew TT than we would have had if your ideas had not been here. We leave this Friday for our first 4 day adventure with alot of the ideas contained here. We will add to this post if we come up with anything along the way...Thanks again.

Merry Christmas to all! Thanks for all of the great suggestions. We are heading out in our "New To Us" 5er around the 8th of January and I still have plenty of time to use some of the ideas we've gotten from this forum. My husband and I gave each other gifts that we will jointly use while RVing. His Garmin was discontinued so I gave him a new updated one and a back up camera and screen. We always use the GPS when we travel - even motorcycling. My inlaws even gave us a crockpot specifically for the RV.

My husband and I have to share a rather small closet and it gets crowded. Clothes often get pushed behind one another and are hard to locate, especially since we own so many different fleece items that are mostly black.

Part of the crowding problem was solved by purchasing some plastic office supply drawers for most of my clothes. Two of the larger ones on the bottom of the closet serve as a little dresser for my clothes. They stack on top of one another and leave enough room for the hanging items. They also make it easy to pack, for I just remove a drawer from its case and bring it into the house to load it with the items needed for the trip.

Since most of my husband's clothes and all of our jackets, rain gear, vests and sweaters are still hanging up, it was still a pain in the neck to locate items. We have a labeler that prints on plastic strips, so my husband labeled the neck of each hanger with the item that goes on it. Now we just look at the hanger to find the item we need.

When dealing with a small space, organization is a must!

Here's some pictures of Stuff we use. I want to get a couple of those 3M stainless steel peel/stick hooks. I sure do like the looks of those vs. the white plastic ones.

From the look of your site it would appear you have this organization thing down pat! You have some great ideas and you look like you've been doing this RV organization thing for awhile!
