Homeless - safe to store propane/gas in car while sleeping?

Hi, does anyone have advice?

I am homeless, and live and sleep in my car. I want to buy a propane or gas camping stove burner so I can boil water to make spaghetti, etc.

I am thinking of buying this one:

Camp Chef Explorer Camping Stove from Amazon

Is it safe to store propane or gasoline next to me while I am sleeping in the car? Should I get a carbon-monoxide detector to mount in the car? There is no place I can store it outside at, and my self-storage facility is almost two hours away from where I live.

Thanks!

Also, where can I pull out my camping stove to cook, next to my car? Will any large parking lot or city street do?

Propane is heavier than air so in a leak the propane will fill the lower cavity of your vehicle pushing the air out your cracked window depleting your oxygen. The propane in a cylinder is compressed so when it leaks will expand and take up a much larger area, not a good thing to keep in your car while sleeping.

Okay, not accepted but definitely a growing trend! What do you think this is all about? Why are more and more municipalities and neighborhoods banning it? Because there are now so many homeless in your country.
Someone from Mexico saying the US has a homeless problem? I guess you don't count the people in your country who live in the shanty towns made of cardboard boxes as homeless.

x2

Mexico City has 1,900,000 kids on the streets..
Mexico City an estimated 40% of people live in informal housing..

Not that I am disrespecting the homeless, but I also don't want to associate myself with them. I am used to living in a house or apartment, have a car, am well educated and intelligent (went to a Ph.D. program at Penn for two years, and did a year at law school at BU), work hard, and have almost a $1,000 a month income from SSDI/SSI. I don't want other homeless people to drag me down.

Then get a job!
Since she didn't complete the PHD program, and didn't complete law school doubt she could keep a job. Apparently there are some serious mental issues going on, which is not surprising since many studies have shown a large proportion of the homeless do suffer from mental illnesses. One of the biggest problems is the mentally ill often do not recognize they are mentally ill, and thus deny that there is a mental health problem and therefore do not seek or accept treatment.

Thanks Wishbone51! I've read elsewhere that all propane tanks leak a little and that's why they have relief valves. So I am concerned by that. Is inhaling those fumes dangerous? I don't know.

Yes - inhaling gas fumes can kill you. Something about "bonds with red blood cells better than oxygen". I remember reading a story about a man in Japan, who was sleeping in a small compartment (on a train, I think) and he um, suffered from a bad case of flatulence and died in his sleep from breathing in too much methane.....

First, you know not of what you speak. Ever been to Appalachia? Down south in Alabama, Georgia, Mississipi, Louisiana where people still live in shacks made out of pallets, cardboard and tin sheeting?

It's globally epidemic, not exclusive to any one country.

You would be better off with a smaller unit like this one that uses the 1lb bottles. Theya re safer to store and the stove is a little more portable.

Shelters suck. Go down and volunteer at one and see for your self.
Homeless sleeping in Cars? A lot of people, families, have lost their homes with nowhere to go. Look around the parking lots, they are out there. News flash, RV's are getting bought up fast so people have somewhere safe and dry to sleep at night(sounds like camping to me).
God speed to 'em getting there lives back together! Unless of course they are actually full timing and chose to!
Take care everyone.

Plenty of people car-camp. Plenty of people are homeless.

I'm not making the direct correlation in all circumstances.

When Angela and I used to car camp in the old Grand Cherokee we would chain the little 5 pound tank to one of the wheels at night or to a local picnic table. I second the regional small town parks. Very cheap, usually basic but good facilities, showers etc. car camping is reasonably common around here, specially if its raining.

Hope things get better for you. Hang in there. God bless.

See if you can find a forest area to head to. Find out about dispersed camping in the forest. You may be able to set up a camp at no charge in a dispersed area for a specified period of time. You then could have the propane, gas outside your vehicle at night - put up a tarp tied to trees and have a dry area to cook outside. I also agree with you about shelters. The ones in our area are also in the downtown ghetto area and most that use them are not desirable people to be around at all.
