We are planning a trip to Yellowstone next August. I want to go about 550 miles the first day. My wife says thats too far. What do others think?

Age, health, experience, setup, lots of variables come into play. Do what is right and safe for you and your wife.

550+ miles. But that got tough. Ended up driving a fair amount in the dark at night. Hate driving at night. Besides having all the car lights, when I'm driving at night, I tend to be really tired.

Now, we try to keep it to 300 to 350. I do not mind waking up early and getting under way while its dark. I'm rested then, and the sky is just going to get lighter.

But of course, I'm much older now, and retired.

Of course your destination will be there, but scheduled vacation days won't.

I have pushed thru 880 miles in a days time, not pleasant. Now I drive until I start feeling fatigued and let my body dictate the distance. Most days 450 - 500 miles I'm comfortable with, distance is not set in stone. Be safe and alert, your destination will still be waiting on you a day later. Why risk injury to yourself or others driving fatigued.

I also average 50 mph with stops. Typically I plan on 7-9 hrs to keep my DW happy but have driven for 12 hours with her when we needed to be somewhere. Alone, I can drive for 15 hrs before I need to stop for the day.

I still work full time, so we have to keep a schedule but try to make that schedule not seem like work.

Some of the perspectives are interesting too. I think where you are traveling may play into the correct answer. Those traveling the eastern side of the country, or up and down the west coast will have many more obstacles and opportunities for stopping. But in the west it's possible to go hundreds of miles with no destination nearby. Very boring but easy driving.

The 550 miles that I want to pull is first day only. We live in Texas and I just want to get to New Mexico so I can feel like I have made some progress. There would not be any traffic to speak of except going through Amarillo. The rest of the trip would be less stressfull. But, I've been married long enough to understand, "happy wife, happy life!"

You realize this isn't really much of a question, but love the answers everytime someone asks this on here. Surprised really, it usually ends up in a argument between the 200 mile a day ers and the 800 milers.
Why are you asking? Never driven that far in one day before? Is there some special concern about it other than a personal preference?

Sorry, and to answer your original question, Max miles towed in a day is around 1000. Haven't gotten more than that in the same 24hour period.

The length of our towing time is determined by whatever it takes to get to our destination. We travel well together, hit the rest stops, and consider the travel time time as part of the vacation. Our truck/trailer tows relatively stress free. It would be different if I had to fight it or white knuckle down the road. Traveling through scenic and beautiful country helps. We can tear off 12 hours no problem.

My longest day was 733 miles only because i was traveling west and had two time changes. Iโ€™m a solo traveler and I stop every 2 hrs for a break and after lunch a 30 minute nap. Each summer I drive from California to Virginia and my first day both ways is typically 550 miles. After that Iโ€™m usually around 350 miles on driving days.
