Swipe and Save? Not so much.

I used my new Swipe and Save card for the very first time.

Price for diesel is $3.999, but any number of other businesses in the same area are advertising diesel for $3.799/gal. So I did get $0.04/gal discount, but that still leaves $0.16/gal over other stations.

Also, convenient its not. I can't swipe my card at the pump. I had to go into the cashier's area where they swiped my card and wanted to know how much money I wanted to spend. In other words I had to estimate how much diesel I needed. Then after pumping, I have to go back inside to get a receipt for the actual purchase.

I've been marking my maps for where these stations are for one of my future trips. The Flying J website publishes prices for each station. So now I can take those prices with me and look for other vendors in the same area and compare.

I'll keep the card, doesn't cost to have it in my pocket! But I'll continue looking for other places to fill. Usually I'll try and hit Murphy's USA, since I try and stay at walmarts anyway when getting there! And if its a walmart owned store, then my walmart discover gets a nickel off.

Are you referring to the RV Rewards card?

I have used mine at many Pilot/Flying J across the country. It gets me several cents off the cash price. Have had no problem swiping at the car/RV pumps. However you cannot swipe it at the big truck pumps you must go inside.

If you are talking about a Flyin-J thing some times the RV cards only work at the RV pumps or the fuel desk.

As for the prices.. Well they vary from day to day.. I recall one morning a few years back when I was headed back to MI from SC... Overnighted in Beaverdam OH at teh "J".. Woke up the next morn, went on line, www.gasbuddy.com and checked the prices. IN 3 states.. Turns out the two stations with the lowest gas price in KY, OH and MI were the one I slept in and the Pilot across the street.. And that is BEFORE swiping my loyality card.

If you have a smartphone, get the free Gas Buddy app and it will tell you that day's prices at all of the gas stations in an area by either you entering the location or letting the phone's GPS locate you. Then you will know exactly where to get the best diesel or gas price and how to get there with the directions that are included.

It is entertaining to read about the efforts people will go through to "save" on fuel. My RV has a 80 gallon tank and usually about 60 gallon sale when I fuel up. 60 x 0.04= $2.40.

That's why I always go down the street to the lower priced fuel stations.
Transaction done at pump and price is much lower.

One of the big plusses of that card is forcing you to come in the store, where you will be likely to impulse-buy high-profit snacks and drinks.
