Now you know that it's everyone's goal in life to pull the Ike don't you? LOL

If its a lifelong dream, don't you think they would enjoy a slower ride to have more time to live the experience...?:W

Its funny... it seems the same people that are weight and speed police in some threads are usually the sames arguing that you need the fastest diesel to get to the top of the Ike 3 minutes faster than the slowest gasser. I might drive the Ike once or twice in my life. I might cross the Rockies 3 or 4 times in my life. My little Tundra 5.7 had plenty of power to pull the Appalachian's in eastern US, where I am likely to spend the majority of my time towing.

I own a diesel simply because I stumbled across a lightly used 2015 diesel... in 2015... for less than the gas engine Ford and Ram that I was searching for. I love the exhaust brake for coming down the other side of the mountain, but my father-in-law tows a comparable size RV with his Chevy 2500 6.0 gas engine and he always has enough grunt to keep up with me going up the hills. Neither of us need a diesel for our weights, and I bet more than 50% of diesel owners here don't NEED the diesel.

As you can see, the Ram 2500 6.4L Hemi performs well on other tests. And then it gets into the Ike at high elevation, and this happens:

So I guess if you live in Colorado and climb the Ike grade while loaded regularly, the Ram wouldn't be your first choice. Other than that, it performs like the hp and tq numbers say it should.

Really though, there isn't a "bad" choice among the big 3 gassers (or diesels for that matter). Buy the one you like.

One can warm up on Union Pass East bound from Davis Dam. I have done the 12 mile 5% pull and rattled down it a couple times on the exhaust brake. Chris

The extra hp and torque does not seem to make the Ram any faster going up Ike according to the videos. I think performance wise they are about even, it would likely come down to which pickup you like best.

The Ike is the only place I have seen that "program" kick in where it limits power output. I never had that happen once, even towing 12k, sometimes at high RPM for extended periods climbing grades in the Canadian Rockies (all at 8000 ft or less elevation).

Ram 6.4 Hemi, 3.73 gears towing an 11K 5th wheel.

1-2 tranny spacing is a mile and the tranny routinely holds 4 too long then slams all the way down to 2nd. Nothing can be done about the 1-2 gap. The downshifting can be resolved by shifting manually.

The 6.4 Hemi engine is a beast but its somewhat wasted on a really crappy tranny.

I agree with the folks talking up the Ford 6.2 with 4.30 gears. That looks like a REALLY nice setup.

Oh, and to add to the confusion. Is there any way to safely enhance the performance of the Chev 6.0 without voiding the warranty? Ahh more popcorn. Thanks DH here.

Yes..... Called Blackbear performance.....efi live tune. Got it myself and love the 91-93 tow tune....35HP 50Tq if I can recall. Best of all it reduces TQ management which of course really wakes up the 6.0. And to add that the 6.0 from the factory 07.5 and up has LS3 heads which flow very well like the Vette. I would, love to supercharge mine but don't have the cash..... Lol

I just want another 50hp, and 50ft/lbs of torque out of mine, and I'd be happy with it.

GM uses "Vortec" on everything from 2.0 liter to 6.0 liter engines. You really think that is a sexy powerful name? :R "Duramax" is a different story, but we are talking about the 6.0 GM here.

Duramax, Powerstroke and Cummins...all three have some, uh, connotations.

I'd go Ford if looking at a gasser 3/4 ton+. Ford has the better trans gearing and has the power. 4.30's for sure. Seems like with the Ram or GM you're not getting the whole package. Why won't Ram fix the gearing in the tranny? GM please update your motor.

Absolutely. Ford surely has the more complete package with motor, trans, and gearing. The 6.2 with 4:30 seems to always get rave reviews from everything I've ever read or seen. If I ever go back to a gasser this is precisely what it would be.
